Community observer Harry W. Drake argues against federal housing plans citing tax impact and local rental competition. He warns that 54 units could empty local properties, reduce tax revenue, and threaten neighborhood finances while questioning the program's economics and potential motives.
The annual G A A award dinner was held May 7 in the high school cafeteria. First year awards went to Kay Bradford and fourteen others. second year awards to Cheryl Harbor and peers. third year awards to Sally Babcock and classmates. fourth year awards to Kay Eagles and fellow honorees. Entertainment was by the Vaughnettes.
Miss Bertha Kammacher and Mrs Violet Shaffner attended a May 9 Careers for Women Conference hosted by Eastern Illinois University Home Economics with speakers from Ralston Purina Pet Milk Banquet Frozen Foods United Van Lines and Laclede Gas.
The Candy Stripers under Mrs. Ruth Kemp organized in 1963 and began work at Burnside Home in Marshall in October 1968. Eight seniors and four juniors assist with bed care, feeding, baths, reading, and letters for residents. six seniors plan nursing training.
Chris Wernz aged 17 months died after drowning in an open well at the family home in West Union. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wernz and three brothers John Don and Lesley, along with grandparents Mrs Fern Wernz and Mr and Mrs Neal Bumpus. Services were Monday at 2 p m at Ohio Church with Rev James Whitkanack presiding. Burial followed in Ohio Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Shotts Marshall welcome a son Gregory Eugene born May 7 weighing eight pounds seven and a half ounces. Sister Debbie greets him at home. Maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Ralph Martin paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Seth Shotts.

Ohio Oil Co reports a gusher near St Francisville with initial 55 barrels per hour. A Martinsville high student death occurred when a Ford Touring car was hit by a Pennsylvania train at a crossing east of Martinsville. An additional marriage license appears for Martinsville residents. A 9 pound baby boy James Burton born to Mr and Mrs Otto Clatfelter.
Thirty years past marriage licenses include Kenneth Hires 29 and Casey Frank Curtis 66 Terre Haute plus Nettie Sanders 53 Marshall. Births: Reign Landis Dennison a 7 pound boy. Morgan Sim mons Wabash township a daughter. Ezra Robinson Marshall harness dealer sold 27 sets last spring, only four this year. Kathryn Staub two and a half, of Clarksville area, swallowed a Ford timer part. removed at Union Hospital Terre Haute after x ray.
Reports note the 1944 births of two boys to Earl and Mrs. Maurer in Terre Haute and to Charles Milbourn. Harlan Litteral, son of William Litteral, discharged from Camp Hood Texas. Sue Gunder received a pony for her fourth birthday as family visitors shared meals and celebrations. A Paris man found an eleven pound red elephant ear mushroom near Oliver along with a dozen other large specimens.
Ten years ago Betty June Thompson and Edmond Bowling wed on April 20. Carlton Crock, a Marshall grocer, overturned on Route 1 near Frazier farm and was critically injured. Dr. Samuel Cullop, 94, died in Terre Haute last Sunday. A license shows Carl Henson, 28 Paris, and Barbara McDaniel, 18, Marshall.
Readout shows total Republican vote 1 092 621 and Democrat vote 1 062 320 for Illinois primary on April 14. Candidates listed include Goldwater Lodge Smith Nixon for president and Percy Kerner Shapiro Powell Hoffmann Meyer as state race contenders with explicit vote counts.
Mrs Rosa Bosstick will fly to Pennesse next Sunday for a two day Beauty Culture Teachers Seminar at the LaSalle Hotel. Sponsored by the Tiinoise Beauty Culture Schools Association of which she is a member and recruitment committee member. She operates the Technique Beauty School in Paris.
Mr and Mrs Eric Miller announce their wedding on Sunday April 19 at the Church of Christ in Paris Illinois with about 150 relatives and friends. Mrs Miller is the former Pauline Renfrow, daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Renfrow of Paris. Mr Miller is the son of Mrs Helen Miller of Marshall and Lannie Miller of Marshall Route 2. They reside on Route 2 Peabarts Indiana and Eli is employed by United States Steel in Gary Indiana.
North Center Community Club schedules a wiener roast at North Center School tonight Friday May 15 at 7 30. The American Legion Auxiliary will meet May 19 at 8 60 pm at the Legion Home. All members are urged to attend.

Mrs. Earl Kile of Marshall won over $200 in free groceries during a five minute shopping spree at the Marshall IGA store. She collected 93 items totaling $201.60 in groceries, with tax paid by the store manager.
