A Washington correspondent notes booming construction and busy streets, describes a major ice gorge on the Potomac, and laments limited access to government posts. He warns about lodging dangers for newcomers, especially young women, amid rapid population and Civil Service hiring.
John A. Kramer, 67, died suddenly at his Terre Haute home and was found in bed Wednesday morning. The body was moved to Marshall for burial Friday. He is survived by four daughters.
Leasing for coal in the district north and east of town has progressed rapidly with options taken on about 5000 acres. Operators backing the project plan to arrive this week to arrange two drills to test the territory.
The March term of the circuit court will convene next Monday with Judge Partlow presiding. Docket lists cases including common law appeals Goldie Kannaday vs Joseph Lewsader et al, and B. F. Johnson vs Town of Darwin. Chancery matters include divorces such as Lillian W. Brandenburg vs Harry E. Brandenburg and Carrie Perry vs J. T. Perry. William Baughman of Vermilion died Monday at home from senile dementia at age 70. Funeral services will be held at the Ohio church this afternoon. He is survived by one son and one daughter.

Mary Abigail Robson Burtner, born February 26 1876 in Clark county, died February 25 1918 at her Dolson township home from pneumonia. She married W S Burtner December 20 1898 and leaves seven children and her husband. Also survived by two sisters and three brothers. She was a United Brethren member for 22 years. Funeral at Shiloh church conducted by Rev O Stolz.
Mrs William Rollson died Sunday at her Dolson Township home from pneumonia, three days before her daughter Mrs Burtner died of the same illness. Funeral services were held today at Shiloh conducted by Rev. Mr Stolz. Survived by three sons and two daughters.
The second road bond election in Fayette County yesterday produced a heavy majority in favor. The vote secures completion of the National Road but not until after the war.
John Hawker acquires machinery on a large farm east of town to crush limestone for fertilizing. The value of limestone for this use grows as farmers increasingly appreciate its benefits and demand outstrips supply.

Cleveland attorney Mr Beckett spoke at Monday night’s council meeting about city notes totaling 3500 tied to a failed water station pump cost 5000. The city risks a lawsuit as parties hold the notes after partial payment, while bills for street lamps and materials are debated and salaries set for two officials.

Mrs Elizabeth Forbeck widow of John Forbeck died last Thursday in Cincinnati from pneumonia at age seventy. The body was brought to this city for funeral services Monday at St Mary’s church. Survived by son Frank Forbeck and daughter Mrs Mary Deeds of Cincinnati who accompanied the remains.
Mrs Joseph Allison, the oldest resident of Marshall, died at home Sunday at age 90 from age related weakness. Funeral services were held at her home with Rev. E G Sandmeyer of Charleston and Rev. C W Ham assisting. She was born March 23, 1828 in Lexington Indiana and moved to Charleston with her parents at age two. She married Joseph L. Allison March 1 1846 in Dolson township. The couple moved to Marshall in 1856 and lived there 63 years until her husband’s death in 1897. She leaves twelve children with Edward in Isabelle California and Charles in Chanute Kansas among those living. She joined the Christian church young, later affiliating with the M E church in Marshall until her death.
Mrs. Caroline Slusser a Marshall resident died Sunday afternoon at her South 8th street home. Funeral at 2 p m today conducted by Rev. C W Hamand. Born Caroline Dietz March 1844 in Elmindingen Baden Germany she came to America at six and settled near Marion then in 186? near Marshall. Survived by daughter Cora brother Henry Diets sister Mrs John Borbaum. Urges Christian faith and family sorrow.
State's Attorney Clements in Danville represented Clark county in Sidell Olney tax suits in U S District Court. Judge Humphries ruled the road must pay all 1915 taxes with no interest and 1916 taxes on $2 000 per mile. The decision affects 1917 taxes and may prompt Board of Equalization action. Clark county taxes shown as 4100 for 1915 and 1916.
