Last evening the Knights of Pynlas held a regular meeting after which J. W. Graham, an esteemed charter member and longtime chancellor commander, was presented a handsome gold-headed cane. The surprised recipient recovered with grace as the event turned into a social gathering with refreshments. A thunderstorm then swept the area.
A party of boys ventured to the Blizzard Ford to swim after heavy rain raised the stream. Pine and Clouse struggled in the swift current and sank. Percy Cox sprang in, retrieved both boys, and brought them out waterlogged and almost unconscious, earning high praise for his bravery.
The Sunday School Convention takes place at McKeen church in Douglas township on Sunday June 11 starting 9 a.m. with devotions and talks by Lela Askins Reynolds Ishler and O’Hair Pierson Burt Ditzenberger and others. An offering will support county work and men are especially invited to attend.
Elder J W Kilborn ends over five years of service as pastor. He and his family will move to Sullivan Indiana where he has accepted a new pastorate. The ministerial association attended his farewell service joining in honor of his clerical work and devotion. Mrs Kilborn and daughters shared in the esteem for the family. Mt Carmel Republican.
At a Monday meeting councilors Dick Morton Jesse Gallatin and Merrick Cox sought permission to connect on the west side sewer conditional on petition to have their property brought into city limits. Ben T Baird sought approval to place a gasoline tank on the sidewalk east of his store but was refused. The annual appropriation ordinance was adopted totaling 3000 for salaries 300 for election judges and clerks 50 for feeding prisoners 1000 for street and alley work 1000 for sidewalks 5000 for electric light plant and 5000 for water plant. City bonds were offered and accepted for Shell Davis as city marshal 1000 and Harry Fredenberger treasurer 2000. The marshal reported no arrests in May and noted he had slain five canines. Bills were approved and the meeting adjourned.
The Mt Carmel Republican reports a 17 year locust swarm dominating the Wabash river bottoms with millions of insects. Farmers fear corn damage though none has been seen yet and the pests may spread to higher ground. Superstition links wing markings to looming calamity.
John Dudley aged about 24 died near Robinson after consuming bootleg whisky with another man Wallace. They left town Saturday evening, Dudley grew violently ill around midnight and died about noon Sunday. Dr. Carlisle cared for him until his death. Dudley had lived with his parents who moved from West York.
Cyprian Preston died in New York City Tuesday of last week at 83. Born in York, he was one of the Preston brothers who ran the Wabash area business and Hutsonville interests. He moved to Evansville as a young man becoming a leading wholesale merchant and thirty years ago to New York City where he built a fortune. He was the last survivor of the Preston brothers.
