The Department of Agriculture reports a rare coincidence of two locust species in 1911 the seventeen year and thirteen year locusts. The seventeen year variety will stretch from eastern Empire State toward central North Carolina while the thirteen year locusts cover the Mississippi Valley from northern Missouri to the Gulf, with large populations expected in Indiana Missouri Kentucky Tennessee and across Arkansas Mississippi and Louisiana.
Carroll Clem a Sixth street barber nearly died after a week long illness. A coughing spasm ruptured an artery in his throat causing hemorrhage and a loss near a gallon of blood. Surgeons could not reach the artery and packed him in ice to slow circulation. Doctors now hope for recovery.
Attorney General Stead issues opinion that paying wardens and related staff from fees is unconstitutional. He declares past salaries for wardens, clerks, inspectors, and state department aides illegal and directs the state auditor to withhold vouchers until explicit appropriations are enacted. The action puts hundreds of positions at risk pending legislative funding.
J B Walker of Palestine NL calls poultry raisers in southern Illinois to a meeting at the Robinson courthouse on March 9 to form a permanent organization of breeders in surrounding counties. The group aims to stage a poultry show during the 1913 12 season at a central location.

Col. D. D. Doll adopts western frost protection methods for an apple orchard west of the city. He orders 700 smudge pots to be placed in rows and lit when temperatures drop to a danger point. He expects to raise the orchard temperature five to six degrees to prevent freezing of winds.

Election committee dismisses Polk Briscoe contest from Westfield for lack of sufficient cause to recount ballots. It also stricks eight other contests. Briscoe offered no proofs of fraud, no definite charges, only vague claims that ten votes per precinct favored Hollenbeck.

A rabies scare grips Westfield as a stray dog prompts the Porter family and Mrs Barney Singler to seek treatment for their children. The town board orders dog owners to keep all animals chained and confined for the next thirty days.
The senate plans a vote on seating Senator Lorimer after his speech. Lorimer will speak in his own defense and Senator Burrows has signaled he will call for a vote at the speech’s end. It is expected Lorimer will be seated.
Burleigh Wilson writes from Deer Creek Oklahoma that 1910 was the driest year in Grant County in 17 years with 13 percent inches of rain and compares 1908’s 55 inches to a 30 inch long term average. He notes high wheat and oat yields despite drought and reports first light rain on February 13.
The Rev C W Jacobs chaplain of the Illinois House of Representatives died Friday at his Casey home from heart failure after falling ill earlier in the week. Born September 28 1845 in Veedersburg Indiana he spent years in ministry before moving to Casey six years ago and later retiring from active ministry. He is survived by his widow and one daughter.
Danville correspondent says Vermilion county vote investigation steeps itself in deceit under Foreman Woodyard. Judge Kimbrough used the inquiry for political gain and a gubernatorial candidacy, portraying a sensational stage from his high judicial position.
