New cases in circuit court include Haslitt versus George and Golda Kohl with attachment, B F Johnson as assignee versus Elmer Cork and others, foreclosure. Milo Page administrator versus Charley Horsley and others in chancery.
Paris mayor Hoff told the city council the smallpox situation has improved with four cases confined to the pest house and two homes under quarantine in the city.
The first burglary of the season occurred Monday night as the homes of Mrs. Mary Ogden and Fred Keifer were entered and edible goods taken. The chicken house of Edward Guinnip was raided and several hens were stolen.
John Fetters died Friday at his daughter Mrs. James Redifer’s home on East Locust Street after a long illness. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s Church. He is survived by two daughters Mrs. Redifer and Mrs. George Mechling, and two sons.
Lena Pearl Hels infant daughter of Lou and Netta Hels was born February 22 1916 and died February 9 1917. The child was described as delicate and sweet brightening the home. Funeral services were held at Clarksville Baptist Church and burial followed in Clarksville cemetery.
General Frederick Funston died suddenly of acute indigestion in San Antonio on Monday at age 61. He first rose to prominence in the Cuban uprising and later in the Philippines where he captured Aguinaldo. All American National Guardsmen have been sent home from the Mexican border without achieving results.
C F Romoser born April 24 1867 in Marion county Ohio son of John C and Christina Romoser died February 14. He came to Clark county as a child and lived here all his life a loyal citizen He joined Hatton church about 18 years ago married Fannie Kennedy April 28 1901 and had eight children two died He leaves wife six children three sisters and many friends Funeral services were held February 16 at Hit On church with interment in Ziegler cemetery
The Herald questions new hard road taxes unless bonds specify permanent brick roads. It argues brick construction and brick driveways with earth tracks suit dry, improving passing and use. It criticizes local rock roads as unsatisfactory and notes past county spending without proper upkeep.
The Good Roads committee reports since April 1914 the township adopted a single highway commissioner. Eighty three permanent concrete culverts have been built, versus six earlier. Significant grading includes Big Creek hill, Paris road, and Buser hill on Charleston road. Expenditures total $8,867.39 for hard roads. The single commissioner system shows about 30 percent savings in supervision over the two prior systems, with more and better road work. A special election on the matter will be held Tuesday, Feb 27, 1917.

Sarah Creamer Babcock died of pneumonia at age 84 after a long life in Coshocton and Clarksville area. She married Thomas A. Babcock in 1854 and lived on a farm near Mill Creek, leaving six sons, one daughter, twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Clarksville Baptist Church with Rev. Carnine and Rev. Huggins. Interment at Clarksville Cemetery.
Walter Reed, longtime U S mail messenger on the Cairo division of the Big Four, is gravely ill at home in Danville after paralysis. Reed has served the Danville Cairo run for 36 years and was a familiar figure along the line.

R. J. Poorman of Poor man Bros. West Union secured the contract for plans specifications and building of a new mill and elevator planned for West Union. He says the plant will be one of the best equipped in the area once completed.
Marriage licences issued to Howard Harper and Belva Hender ich both of Marshall township Grover Lewis and Oretha Pickens both of Wabash township Paul Haddock Coles County and Martha Brandenburg Westfield.

Howard Harper and Miss Belva Honderich married last Wednesday afternoon at the U B parsonage with Rev. N E Royer officiating. They will reside on the Dan Eckies farm.
Charles Buchanan pleaded guilty in county court for stealing a horse hide. He received a one year sentence at Pontiac and was taken to the institution on Friday.
Mrs George Wilson died at her home in upper Wabash township after a six week illness. She was 65. Funeral services were held at the family residence and burial followed in Forsythe cemetery. Survived by husband Clem a son and daughter Mrs Rennie Maloney of Oliver.
The Lawrenceville game ended 40 to 16 as the team lacked speed against a fast opponent. Freshmen lost 22 to 17 at Hutsonville to the eighth grade. Allies beat Seniors 39 to 8 for the Senior Annual fund. Mr Williams earned a University of Illinois physics lab assistant post. Forest English joined Vandalia railroad. The high school faculty hosted grade school teachers with guessing contests and refreshments, hoping to make it annual.
A sequence of recent real estate transfers in Marshall regions records multiple parcels changed hands. Transactions include T W Jones to H B Roebuck et al for part of Dulaney’s 1st, several quitclaim and fee simple transfers, notable sums from $1100 to $9025, and parcels in Kendall’s addition Casey Sturdevant’s addition and surrounding blocks.
Gov. Lowden’s consolidation plan abolishes over 100 boards and departments and groups state offices into nine new departments led by directors and assistants. The bill passed the House 143 to 2, is expected to clear the Senate, with minor changes possible and a joint conference to follow.
