Illinois soils need legumes and commercial nitrogen

Illinois crops use about 450000 tons of nitrogen yearly, requiring 1350000 tons of ammonium nitrate if that amount is to be provided solely by fertilizer. Legume acreage covers about three million acres, replacing roughly 159000 tons of nitrogen, leaving a potential fertilizer market of about 300000 tons.
