Annie Inrichsen reports at Clark County almshouse expose. Inmates live in filth with vermin and dilapidated facilities while the superintendent bears cost and control. Call for new management, state hospital transfers, and separate care with adequate funding to end the disgrace.
Mrs. Mary Ann Shepherd of York township was declared insane last Thursday and taken to the state hospital at Anna.
The Evangelical Association announces preaching services next Sunday. Morning service at Zion Big Creek church and evening service at Immanuel Grand Turn church. Pastor Leo J. Ehrhardt extends a cordial invitation to all.
Ed Kohl pleaded guilty in county court on one count of selling liquor and was fined 50 dollars plus costs. A similar charge in the city court added 10 dollars in fines and costs, making a total of 80 dollars.
J A Sweet master in chancery transfers lot 14 Archers addition Marshall to Foster Martin for $1. J W Witwer transfers lot 66 Perry's 3rd Casey to C H Cochonour for $150. Julia L Smith transfers part 56 se 12 11 12 to Nannie M Landers for $1100. Lewis Sutton commissioner transfers land in 9 10 13 to Claud Taggart for $810.
Mrs. Tamar Blundell Ward, mother of Mrs. L G Archer, died at her daughter’s home in Chillicothe Mo. A native of Marshall she left town about 40 years ago and had been an invalid for a long time. She was 82 and survived by four daughters and two sons.
Al Hanley of Oliver area was arrested and jailed in Paris last Friday on forgery charges. He allegedly used a Dora Hanley note to pay W S Logan for two horses, Miss Dora Hanley declaring the note forged.
Clarence Hunt of Darwin township chased a missing horse for days and finally found it wedged in a cistern with only a 26 inch entrance. The horse stood with its head twisted and earth-filled cavity surrounding it but escaped uninjured after rescue.
Clark County residents urged to approve a 20 year serial bond plan under the Tice road law to build improved roads. The program would place roads under State Highway Department supervision and eventually become state funded. Reports note county poor relief and probation duties managed by Treasurer J W Fredenberger with several offenders supervised without pay.
Clark county teachers hold annual institute this week in the high school. A new class grading system increases interest. Instructors include Prof J H Brewer Peoria in arithmetic and grading, Prof O C Bailey Effingham in elementary science and agriculture, Mrs Hila T Price Bloomington in primary and music. The week ends Friday with eighth grade diplomas in the M B church at 2 pm and Prof C C Bailey delivering the address. about 86 students are to receive common school diplomas.
The Christian Church plans a morning service with Rev. A R Van Fossen district superintendent of the Central District of the Anti-Saloon League delivering the evening talk. Service starts at 7 30 P M. The teachers meet Tuesday evening and all teachers and visitors are urged to attend. The Ladies Aid Society will meet at the usual time and place. W W Jones Pastor.
Frank Gill and Roy Elledge of the Clarksville neighborhood were fined 640 dollars each after breaking down small shade trees at the jail and attempting to camp in the jail yard. Sheriff Wallace remanded them to the city prison overnight.
Mrs Martha Riley 67 of North Eighth Street killed herself by drowning in her home cistern early yesterday. Her granddaughter, 13, found the body after searching the house. Survived by two brothers Cline and three grandchildren. Burial planned in Melrose township.
Sermon subjects for next Sunday are Morning Worry and Care and Evening A Coward in the Face of Duty. Miss Ada Brandenstein will sing in the morning and the orchestra will provide special music in the evening. The public is invited. The board of review increased assessments in Douglas township by 15 percent, Casey by 15 percent, and Wabash by 6 percent. The hike applies to farm land and improvements only, returning figures near the levels from four years ago after prior reductions across all townships.
Merom chautauqua plans its largest event with Hon. Champ Clark appearing August 22. Leading Democrats of the district form the reception committee. Senator John Kern will introduce Speaker Clark at a Foster House Bluffs dinner for 250 guests.
Dr and Mrs R. A Mitchell entertained the Royal Neighbors of America at their home with a Friday social featuring music games and summer refreshments. The couple left Monday for their annual vacation in Petoskey Michigan.

Ova James sues Charles James for divorce in circuit court. Mr and Mrs John Fowler attended the Big Springs picnic Monday. Clint Clark and wife visited her parents here over Sunday. Mr and Mrs Weir of Indiana are visiting a aunt Mrs John Fowler for a few days. Mr and Mrs Erna Holmes of Indiana visited home folks over the weekend. Roy Bartlett and family spent part of last week in Terre Haute with relatives. Mrs E Ketchant and Mrs Curry visited friends on Walnut Prairie Sunday. Mrs Monroe of Indians spent one day last week with her son and his wife here. An ice cream supper at the M E church Saturday night benefits the church. all invited.
The National Vending Machine Company relocates its factory to the Howell building at the southwest corner of the square. The move improves convenience and arrangement compared with the former location.
The Evangelical Association Sunday school of Zion Big Creek will hold its annual picnic in Matthew Abel’s grove. attendees are urged to come early, bring dinner, and spend the day. The date is Tuesday August 24.
In circuit court Ed Hoggie Lovell faced trial for robbing George Schad. The jury deliberated all night and remained deadlocked fifty fifty. They were discharged and Lovell will be retried at the November term.
The Armstrong preaching starts 10 30 Sunday morning with benevolences. An all day meeting at Oak Grove Sunday August 24 includes morning and noon dinner under the oaks and a speech by Rev E G Sandmeyer of Marshall. Evening services at Livingston with regular benevolence offering by A B Cochnower.
An act for relief of the blind effective July 1 requires the county board of supervisors to fund relief for the blind from general funds. The levy creates a pension fund of 150 dollars per year to eligible male and female blind residents, with a designated examiner to assess applicants and keep year round office hours. the supervisors will name the examiner at their next meeting.
The Jones Bros present a merged threefold circus tour claiming the most complete traveling show. A mile long parade, a hundred thousand dollar menagerie, elephants camels leopards bears tigers hyenas wolves zebra and horned horse.
