Naval battle devastates German fleet off Riga Gulf

Destructive Fire Destroys Mrs Wheeler Home
A small residence owned by Mrs. Thomas Wheeler and occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Abe Clouse in the southwest town was completely destroyed by fire Friday evening after 7. Fire crews could not stop the blaze. The Clouses lost household goods valued at $400 with no insurance.

Mrs. John W. Smitley dies after long illness at 71
Margaret Batts Smitley born November 15 1843 in Germany died August 19 1915 at her daughter’s Auburn Township home aged 71. She married John W. Smitley in 1859 who died April 15 1908. Survived by seven children Lena predeceased with three other children, 42 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A lifelong United Brethren church member and devoted charity worker, she had been bedridden since last April and suffered until the end. Funeral held at Spiketown church conducted by Rev E G Sandmeyer with interment in Spiketown cemetery.

The county teachers attended the five day Institute led by many named educators. The superintendent announces the new high school tuition law effective this year and district options. Graduating exercises at M. E. church drew thirty graduates with diplomas and scholarships awarded. Entrance high school exams will be on the fourth Saturday in August at several towns for students needing improvement. New sanitary law provisions for school buildings go into effect July 1 1917 including heating and stove safety requirements.
