Philip Moore aged about 68 of Evansville Indiana was killed Wednesday evening around 7 30 when struck by a car while walking on the pave ment seven miles east of Marshall A second eastbound car swerved and he stepped in front of it to avoid the bright lights The car occupants were Delmar Freeman Terre Haute George Jeffers and Emanuel Buchanan all of Paris The coroner’s jury ruled accidental death Moore visited the Herald office shortly before his death and said he was traveling to Terre Haute to seek work The accident left Moore with a crushed head and chest and he died about 30 minutes after the crash The H M Dewey ambulance transported him to Marshall where Dr R A Mitchell treated him Relatives in Evansville were notified and were expected to come promptly The man was a printer by trade
The Eastern Illinois Interscholastic Association schedules its annual spring meet for April 29 and 30 in Martinsville with sixteen member schools. Marshall will stage preliminaries in music and literature next Wednesday. tennis Friday at 9 00 am. literary music preliminaries Saturday at 9 00 am. finals Saturday at 7 30 pm. track and field events start Saturday at 1 40 pm.
Harry McDaniel defeated D. Sowers for a seat on the high school board in a Saturday election with about 800 votes cast. McDaniel 410 to Sowers 398, a 17 vote majority. Grade school candidates C G Claypool Frank Erosman and W E Morris were elected unopposed with about 160 votes total. Dan Neff and Arthur Guinnip also elected school trustees without opposition. In the House of Representatives a heated fight followed an amendment by Rep Tice to a bill on county fair funding requiring sworn anti fraud statements. the amendment was tabled and the bill moved to third reading. A March 30 session saw a bill to let school boards name nurses defeated, risking nurse jobs. adjournment to April 12 was adopted for elections.
Al Myers operates Grandview Poultry Farms east of Martinsville. He raises White Leghorns from Wy coff stock, with five incubators for custom hatching and own-bred chicks. Plans include a 20x200 foot house for 11000 laying hens, trap nested with egg production records and breed type tracking.
A list of marriage licenses shows couples from Terre Haute and surrounding areas such as Marion Heights Robinson Sullivan and Charleston. Ages range from 16 to 43 with grooms and brides pairing in Terre Haute Indianapolis and Chicago connections. The records include George McClintock 23 and Hazel Collins 17 and several other couples including Blythe Kendall 24 with Selah Smith 16 and Raymond Hunter 21 with Vera Roberts 18.
Tommy Ryan former world middleweight champion aged 78 gave an exhibition at the high school on Tuesday at 1 PM. He said he retired at 48 and is the oldest man alive doing athletic work. He demonstrated skill and strength and attributed it to clean living.
The Marshall Township high school stunt show at the Pythian Theatre drew a packed house Friday night. Nine acts from clubs organizations and classes competed for prizes. Bits of Vaudeville by Girls' Companion Club won first prize. The Lamp Went Out by the senior class took second. The Swing Song by mixed Glee clubs earned third. A popularity contest during intermission awarded Miss Louise Foley and Walter Booth top honors.
City Board of Health and Major John McCauley issue order muzzling or tying up all dogs running loose until May 15. A mad dog was killed in Marshall last week after biting ten dogs. Any loose dogs after last Friday would be shot by the City Marshall.
Relatives in Marshall report the body of Mitchell Geisert will be brought back around May 19 for burial in Marshall. He died Wednesday last week at his home in Los Angeles, California, son of Mrs. Maria Geisert of Marshall. A separate item notes Mrs. Tom Crump sprained her ankle Tuesday night after stumbling over a rolled rug at her home above the Little Owl Cafe. Emanuel Claypool returned to Marshall Sunday from Long Beach after two years away, traveling by automobile both ways.
Mrs Lyman Campbell aged 61 died at her Keen home on Friday. Funeral services were held at 11:00 Monday at Asbury Church with Rev. King of Terre Haute officiating. Burial followed in Asbury Cemetery. Survived by husband two sons and three daughters.
The Lincoln Oil Refining Company in Robinson announces officers for the coming year with J K Kerr of Marshall as president and N T Stover of Robinson as assistant superintendent and director. The board also includes H L Deming and C C Carroll from Marshall and H B Carpenter with C L Flemming of Findlay Ohio. A local branch has undergone major improvements with over a million dollars spent.
Clark County Post No. 90 of the American Legion will hold its regular meeting Monday at the legion rooms. Discussion will cover a membership drive per state commander Ferre C. Watkins of Chicago following the 18th district meeting at Watseka. Delegates included John Brandenstein George Farris Jack Cline Fenton Cole and Earl Finney. A district report is planned for Monday. Adjutant Russell Riley noted the post is 100 members short of its two year peak.
Ex preacher Rev. A V Babbs spoke at the high school Tuesday evening on the Kaskaskia Vincennes Trail with George Rogers Clarke. He also read from his new novel before the morning assembly yesterday.
Parts of an oil rig were transported from the Big Four railway station to the Martin Wernz farm east of Marshall on Tuesday. The rig will be assembled there and a test well drilled to explore production potential.
