Illinois nets 10000 coho smolts into Lake Michigan near Great Lakes Naval Base
The Illinois Department of Conservation released 10 000 coho salmon smelts into Lake Michigan near the Great Lakes Naval base south of Waukegan. The fish, imported from Michigan two weeks earlier, were kept in harbor cages and fed daily until smolting completed. Biologists expect them to reach Chicago area rivers as 18month old adults to support a 10 to 15 pound sport fishery. Illinois lacks suitable streams for salmon.
