Local boy Kenn Ellington dies from Vietnam wounds

Special 4th Class Kenneth Julian Ellington 27 of Route 2 Marshall died April 8 1969 at Army hospital Saigon from injuries suffered March 5 1969. He lived in Marshall most his life and attended Marshall schools. Entered service September 13 1967. Survived by mother Ruby and six brothers and four sisters. Military funeral 2:00 pm at Marrs Funeral Home with burial in local cemetery.

Tommy Low age 4 son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Low rural route 1 was seriously injured Thursday afternoon April 10 from a fall from an 8 tractor. He is slowly improving in Union Hospital.

School Board elects officials and plans budget actions

The Board of Education met April 14 canvassing ballots and electing R D Gustafson Mack Strohm and William Tingley to three year terms. Joe Welsh was chosen president and Frieda Thompson secretary for 1969 70. Budget adjustments of about 50000 are anticipated and 11000 already spent on health and safety upgrades. Several teachers were resigning or hired for 1969 70 and the Mothers Club sponsored an all sports banquet with speakers Brad McCutchan and Gordon Stauffer.

Outstanding awards at Illinois Junior Academy expo

Dr Joe Connelly Named Head of Political Science

Dr Joe Connelly, former Illinois General Assembly member and longtime Eastern Illinois University faculty, was named head of the political science department by President Quincy Doudna. He previously served 1964 66 in the state house and received the Independent Voters of Illinois outstanding legislator award. He holds a EdM and EdD from Illinois, with undergraduate work at Kansas, born Marshall on April 2 1926.

Weaver Receives Purple Heart for Vietnam War Service

Pfe Charles D Weaver, 29, of Gordon Grove California, son of Mr and Mrs Leland Weaver, earned the Air Merl on Viet Nam. He is a radio teletype operator with Cy BR 2nd Battalion 593 Infantry of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He entered the Army in 1967 and arrived overseas in June 1968. He also holds the Purple Heart.
