Washington December 20 The law enforcement commission led by George W Wickersham advocates education over force to curb crime noting England reduced drunkenness and saloon hours through public education. They cite rising arrests for intoxication and liquor violations and warn political interference weakens enforcement while crime appears to rise with more laws and better reporting. The panel plans to resume deliberations next week.
Mrs C C Miller traveled to Kalamazoo for several weeks stay with her daughter Mrs Otis Jk. W Cronin attended the funeral of Edward F Stace in Grand Rapids, a former Marshall resident. Arthur Goodwin, recently at Oaklawn Hospital with pneumonia, was discharged. The Royal Neighbors meet with Mrs Annis at 219 South Eagle Street on Monday evening after the Christmas night gathering.
Financial Review by Elmer C Walzer notes a total rise of 11.37 billion dollars in the first quarter followed by a decline in prices over three months. Values dropped by nearly 8 billion, May added over 5 billion, and a wipeout occurred by November 10th.
Mrs Lena Hindenach 108 South Marshall avenue died at home last evening at 85. She was born in Germany April 18 1845 and came to the United States with her parents later settling near Ann Arbor. She married George Hindenach in 1864 and had several children including Samuel Charles Frank William George and John, with two deceased. Survived by sister Emma Platz two brothers Abraham and John Myers seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral set for 2:30.
William H. Arthur announced the sale of the Garden Theatre to William G. Thick of Ishpeming. Thick and his two sons will take possession January 1, move to Marshall as soon as housing is found, and run the theatre. Arthur retires with no plans for the future after building the venue in 1916 and introducing talkies in Marshall.
Detroit reports grand jury actions close to a murder probe of radio commentator Gerald E Buckley. Indictment naming Ted Pizzino as a trigger man joined other suspects including Joe Bommarito and Angelo Livecchi. Police described an arsenal raid and arrests tied to the case as Begonia testified.
Chicago reports two children, Jerome Israelson aged five and Homer aged four, killed when a gas fueled explosion lifted a roof and caused a fire destroying the one-story brick building. Their mother Dori Israelson was seriously injured and rescued by neighbor Jacob Krausek. The father Irving Israelson collapsed on hearing the news.
Flint jury of six men and six women deliberates over Grant J. Brown former president of Union Industrial bank charged with embezzling 30968 after an 11 day trial. Jurors failed to reach a verdict after about three hours of debate yesterday evening.
