Newark Dec. 17 judge William Clark held the eighteenth amendment invalid on the ground it was improperly ratified, saying ratification by constitutional conventions rather than state legislatures was required. He noted the ruling concerns process, not federal prohibition status, and cited debates and speeches from 1869 to justify convention ratification as more representative.
Flint banker Grant J Brown faced continued defense efforts in circuit court as he represented himself against an alleged embezzlement charge. His questioning of former defense attorneys was ruled out of order by Judge James S Parker, who said Brown’s courtroom inexperience caused the interruptions. Prosecutor Teagle accused Brown of contempt, but the judge found no intent to provoke the court and noted his inexperience as the cause.

Governor Green granted parole to R C Wurster, a former Pontiac dealer convicted of forging contracts, part of twelve cases mostly deportations. Other paroles included Walter Plato for murder, Carl Scheurer for a statutory charge, James Pitts for second degree murder, and Oscar Anderson for life. In Cadillac Michigan a secret session questioned Mrs Frank Harrand and six men as part of contempt proceedings against her husband, Grand Traverse county farmer, who claimed he did not know who provided him liquor at a dance. Mrs Harrand stood by her story that she did not know the giver. She was brought from her farm home where she tends three children and manages farm duties. The judge declined to discuss the private hearing.
