Thrift stores report a dramatic rise in Jewel Coffee sales, claiming a 3000 percent increase attributed to its quality. Stores tout bargains and have increased stock while cutting prices to 22 cents per pound or three pounds for 65 cents to pass savings to customers.
Mrs. W. T. Boyd and daughter Mrs. J. S. Johnson with her son John William drove to Murphysboro on Wednesday and visited friends while noting the 59 cent Chronium costume rings at Armstrong's Jewelry Store.

Springfield Illinois January 29 Trial of Morris Mansfield and his wife Jessie of Peoria charged with murder in connection with ten deaths from alleged poison alcohol has been set on the county court criminal docket for February 10. The case, last on the term docket, may be continued to April. The Mansfields, previously tried on two murder charges in Peoria County, are at liberty under heavy bond. The case was moved here on a change of venue.
Funeral services for Verne Harrolle were held at nine o'clock at the First Methodist church with Dr. J W Cummins officiating. The service included readings from the 23rd Psalm and St John 14, three hymns, and a quartet from the First Methodist choir. Interment followed at Laird cemetery in Jefferson county. Relatives from Jefferson county and Mrs. Charles Whitmeier of Augusta, Georgia attended.

E L Hillhouse was in Johnston City today on business. Local observers noted no public events or remarks accompanying the visit.
A wave of highway robberies in southern Illinois ties to a kidnapping in Carbondale and thefts around Marion. Ray Watson, alias Guinney Watson, is arrested in Herrin, identified as a gang member by a youth who linked him to a robbery five miles north of Seong. Matt Powers, jailed in Herrin, is identified as a kidnapper of Sizemore and one of the Marion Mills robbers. Authorities pursue two more suspects while urging station operators to carry revolvers after a Zeigler guard shot and killed Ben Williamson during a hold up.
Mrs Mary Lockard of Nokomis faced circuit court in Hillsboro Illinois on January 29 charged with murdering her estranged husband William Otis Red Lockard a coal miner. He reportedly shot during a quarrel at a relative’s home on October 20 and died days later. State's Attorney Wandelder quoted in a deathbed statement that she fired the shot. Lockard was released on $16000 bond and plans a self defense plea.
Members of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society and the Corn Cross Society will meet tonight after prayer meeting at the First Methodist Church to rehearse music for next Sunday night. All members are expected to attend.
Ex State Senator Kent E Kellar spoke to Marion residents on unemployment at the court house. He urged using government funds to create work through highways and public enterprises and urged voting out misruling leaders in favor of the common citizen. Crowd packed the hall and many stayed for greetings after the talk.

Inspectors travel by auto with standard weights and liquid measures to test grocers gasoline stations drugstores elevators and coal scales. Violations carry 20 to 500 fine and possible jail, with inspections costing ten cents to five dollars.
