What the Coal Strike Has Done by London Knight
London Knight, a Cookey's Home Journal contributor, reports on the November illustrated piece about the coal strike. He argues miners are not as downtrodden as depicted, noting relatively high pay and decent homes, while accusing operators of misleading the public about labor costs and profits. He cites a 16 percent annual operator return and a 15 percent return for private mineowners, and describes social discontent in Shenandoah with depressed families and neglected schooling reflected in the broader community.
