Superintendent Carrington notes Missouri public schools employ 16,000 teachers, serve 720,000 students, and pay 5.2 million dollars in salaries. Rural teachers are 65 percent, instructing 59 percent of students and receiving 40 percent of pay. Catholic schools total 252 with 36,256 pupils. 63 academies/colleges have 514 teachers and 4,504 pupils. parochial schools total 199 with 746 teachers and 31,732 pupils.
