A Friday dispatch notes momentum toward war between Japan and Russia, while President Roosevelt issues a special message to Congress early in the week defending U.S. stance in the Colombia and Panama situation and warning against confrontations.
The next Republican National Convention will be held in Chicago June 21. Marcus Alonzo Hanna is expected to figure in the political scene around that time as potential frontrunner or opponent. Boopnen Karatz has abandoned hope of extradition fight and is likely headed to St. Louis with his family. He plans to return to Mexico after resolving his legal troubles there.
In early 1904 readers are urged to begin the year by avoiding rough paths and rough places in life. The call encourages personal happiness within homes and spreading joy and sunshine along the journey.
In this city this week the executive committee of the Southeast Missouri Press association announced a meeting to be held in Bismarck on Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. The Charleston Enterprise urged all Southeast Missouri newspaper men to take an interest and plan to attend.
The Caruthersville Democrat warns that dishonesty yields only temporary gains and eventual losses. It praises sterling honesty as the best policy even amid greed, noting a dollar gained dishonestly becomes a curse rather than a blessing.
The Republican on fifteen and the Press on twelve both praised as fine country newspapers by editors Mitchim and Crow in a small city. A Chicago theatre fire at Troquois last Wednesday caused 566 dead 500 injured and 127 missing. Mrs Dryden and son Taylor of Farmington among the dead. The building lacked fire escapes and an electric wire sparked the blaze.
Reported by papers as a large gathering of enthusiastic supporters for Mr Folk. The meeting signals a more vigorous push for his gubernatorial nomination. Democrats nationwide favor Polk for his honesty and reformist stance in the legislative branch.
Attorney Mose Whybark from Marble Hill appears active in state politics and law. A later notice assigns written authority to Whybark to handle all litigation for two railroad companies in St. Louis and various Missouri counties including Cape Girardeau and Pemiscot.
James Orchard will oversee lit imation in Wayne Stoddard Butler Ripley and Dunklin counties. Orr Luster will handle lit imation in Arkansas and Carter county Mo. Lyford and Edward Senett named general counsel and general attorney respectively. Mr Whybark arrives at Cape to lead new work. Cape Progress notes pride in the Fristoe system and wishes him well.
An inquest on Edward Gibbs’s death last week returned a verdict of murder in the first degree against James Jenkins. James Jenkins and his father George Jenkins were arrested and jailed by Sheriff King and Deputy Estes, with the elder Jenkins held as an accessory to the crime.
Barton county according to Arthur Anil editor of the Lamar Democrat has the best informed geography class in the state. The oral exams show quick recall of Missouri facts with many questions and strong answers. The class showcases Barton county’s resources for the Missouri World’s Fair Commission and county industries.
An advertisement extols a child friendly remedy called One Minute Cough Cure for coughs croup and la grippe. It claims immediate relief by acting at the source of trouble reducing inflammation and aiding healing. Dr Armstrong of Dallas Texas recommends it daily and endorses its efficacy. Daisy Winters of Cape Girardeau visited. Edith Reed hosted a well attended school entertainment. Council Ridge school under Prof Robins shows progress. Scattered notes report M A Estes of Marble Oi on Monday on business, Dr Chandler of Lutesville in town Sunday, L Barnett of Glen Allen en route north for Williams Cooperage Co. Uncle David Seabaugh and wife visited relatives, Doc Newell traveled to Buchbanan area, Mrs Frank Crites returned from Cape Girardeau, S B E Dewitt and N F Chestner near Whitewater on Monday business, Constable Crader of Marble Tall in the area Friday, Rev Aker, Stone and Page held meetings at Chestner schoolhouse with church additions, several local boys joined New Year shooting Thursday, Hosea Seabaugh family returned from near Sedgewickville, Prof W R Farrar and wife welcomed a bouncing baby.

The last report of the Missouri lead and zinc inspector notes Missouri mines produce nearly a million dollars monthly, with capital invested far exceeding the price of the Philippines. It adds that a New England state could be dropped into Missouri's lead and zinc area without reducing output, and cites an army of over 100 employed in Missouri zinc mines.
Ezra Fox recalls a perilous elevator ride in a city store during a light hearted tale. He describes the sudden jerk, neck strain, and near suffocation as the cage shot upward and dropped, ending with a warning that such thrill rides are dangerous and not worth the risk.

Jesse Lutes known as Uncle Jesse died at his son W Hy Lutes home in Lutesville on December 41 1803 aged 75. His remains laid to rest in Deck cemetery on New Years Day. He was a devout Christian and longtime member of the M E Church South, praised as faithful and charitable, a good citizen.
