Chessley Hire was born in Braninsville UK on March 15 and died of disease in France on February 2 at age 27 years 10 months and 17 days. The body arrived in Mansfield from France on June 8 and was buried with full military honors in Mansfield Cemetery on June 12. He was a son of Cyrus and his wife, lived in Dil until 1900, then moved to Kans and later Mansfield. He entered service May 25 1918, joined Company I, Inf Division, went to France in August 1918. He leaves a wife and son, father, mother, and five sisters and one brother.
A lively Wednesday night saw officials from Wright and Douglas counties seize 60 gallons of mash south of Norwood. Two horses were stolen near Mansfield from Tom Pry and Dwight Dennis but later returned as posses chased the thieves. A woman and two men were arrested on general principles, then released before later detentions and releases by Ava and Cedar Gap authorities. One suspect was taken by Walter Lee of Mountain Grove. The moonshiners fled with their still leaving the mash behind.
A devotional meeting program lists Lorene Cantrell as leader with Mrs Dean as scripture reader from Philippians 2 111 introduced by the leader. Sections include Naoma Dodson Josie Seal Eilene Stephens Leo Dean Nellie Tool Earl Cole Homer Brown Mrs Hattie Cantrell and Mr Mathew discussing humility and the mind of Christ with exaltation as the outcome.
Mansfield Produce Co Yates Produce House Mansfield Farmers Exchange announce they will close their businesses on the Fourth of July as customary in Mansfield. Citizens are urged to bring produce on the preceding Saturday.
The Mansfield Fourth of July celebration features a 10:00 a.m. band concert, addresses by Mayor J. E. Craig and Prof. Roy Ellis, a noon dinner, afternoon contests with cash prizes, a tug of war, a baseball throwing contest, a movie show, and a 3:30 ball game between Mansfield Grays and Hartville, with further concerts at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in City Park.
The regular County Convention Singing will be held in Hartville the first Sunday in July. Everyone is invited to attend with books of all kinds, spend the day, and participate in the song service. Bring dinner and stay for the day.
