The Mansfield column lists June 21 summer start and July 10 11 Chautauqua dates, local visits by E O Skelton D R Snyder C C Newton and many other named residents, plus fairs, fence trade, auctions, road trips and church activities. It notes births deaths sales and a request for prayer meetings led by H M Norcross urging communal worship and unity.
Produce houses in Mansfield announce closure on July 4 as in years past. Yates Produce House and Mansfield Farmers Exchange urge customers to bring produce supplies on the Saturday before the holiday.
With Marshal Strong and Constable Atkins absent, Mayor and Justice appoint Mack Davis and Daunt Ruppee as special officers to monitor suspicious individuals passing through Mansfield. They detained Joe Olds, a Mr. Ferrell, and a Grace Ferrell. Olds is wanted in Mrn Grove on a charge. Ferrells face charges and are held for investigation at Hartville jail. The woman matches a Knoxville Tenn. crime suspect with dope and a hypodermic instrument found on her person.
Wright and Douglas County officers along with Sheriff crews e and deputies Joe Dennis John Pryor and Mansfield officials raided the Douglas County hills near Tarbutton creek last Wednesday night. They found about three barrels of wash where a still had operated for days. The still was removed hours earlier. no arrests were made as moon shiners signaled and escaped. The raid marks a significant victory for prohibition enforcement despite no captures.
At C P church the Christian Endeavor group explored how lives of men and women influence others. Speakers included Helen Friend Ned Gaines Herman Williams Lois Beach Lorenda Cantrell Wanda Craig May Benjamin and others discussing lessons from Bible characters missionaries Lincoln and more with topics and questions guiding personal inspiration.
The regular County Convention Singing will be held in Hartville the first Sunday in July or the 8th. Everyone is invited to bring books of all kinds, speed the day, and participate in the song service. Bring dinner and stay all day by order of Committee.
James Langley and Miss Mabel Hoover were married Tuesday at Springfield. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jake Hoover of Mansfield, grew up there. Langley, from Monett, worked on road construction east of town. They will live in Mansfield temporarily then plan to move to Oklahoma. The Mirror offers best wishes.
At a recent Fourth of July committee meeting in Mansfield, multiple subcommittees were appointed to run the July 4 event. Names include Roy R. Dennis, Elmer Strong, G. C. Freeman, O. B. Davis, W. M. Divan, and Mayor J. E. Craig among others. Activities listed: band concerts, welcomes, speeches by Roy Ellis, contests, a ball game Mansfield on Hartville, and a dinner. Residents urged to decorate homes and businesses and wave Old Glory.
