Forman Braves Clinch Second Win in Tough Victory

Forman Braves beat Mason City 3 to 2 after a prior 33 to 6 win over San Jose. Manito out-hit 8 to 7 as Parkin and Wells tripled for Manito and Snyder homered for Mason City. Golden to Wells to Bilyeu turned two double plays in the Braves’ favor. Roy Galvin of St Louis attended a funeral for his cousin in Peoria.

Golden Hilst Nuptials Set For Sunday

Becky Thompson Is Third Polio Victim

Becky Jane Thompson daughter of Harold and Mrs Thompson was admitted to the isolation ward of St Frances Hospital Peoria Sunday evening as a polio patient. Becky is the third polio victim among the children of our community this summer.

Centennial participants in Havana event showcase historic dress

In Havana's Centennial last weekend many nearby towns joined. Mrs. Stuart Thomas wore a costume from 1845 altered in the 1970s, with a bonnet crafted from an 1845 fashion print guiding its styling. A Polaroid photo captured the moment.

Mary Etta Cox Dies at 84 in Manito Community

Mary Etta Cox daughter of John Franklin and Mary Ann Davis Cox born July 25 1871 on a farm east of Manito later lived in Manito. She and her mother operated the Cottage Inn and welcomed travelers. Active in many causes including Red Cross WWI sewing and Meadow Lawn Cemetery fund drives she remained devoted to faith and service. She died at Methodist hospital on September 4 after three years of impaired health leaving nieces Pearl DeSutter Helen Klocker Neva Spiller Doris Eweing and nephew William Cox as survivors.

Second Lt Runyon Bids Farewell After Week With Family

Service news notes Second Lt. Stanley B. Runyon departed Wednesday night for Nellis Air Force Base Nevada after a week with relatives and friends. He will undertake fourteen additional weeks of training before heading to Maine.

Philip Frederick youngest son of Mr and Mrs John Frederick received his Honorable Discharge at Dayton Ohio August 31. He arrived home September 2 and plans to enter work as a mineralogist in the eastern region after visiting relatives.

Reverend David Powell has been transferred to the Methodist Church at Washburn Illinois and preached his first sermon there last Sunday. The Washburn church, the Bishop and the district superintendent were notified as friends and the local congregation reacted with surprise at the announcement.

Rev and Mrs Powell arrived in Manita in 1948 and during five years of service endeared themselves to many. They will preach Sundays in Washburn while replastering and redecorating the parsonage. The church awaits their pastorate for the conference year.

Selke Family Visit Spans Oxford to Indianapolis

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Selke of Oxford Ohio and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Selke of Indianapolis visited from Friday to Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Selke. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Schnitker of Pekin joined Monday as the group spent the day at the Havana Centennial.
