Manito's fire crew answered two calls this week. Monday at the country home of Mrs. Charles Jacobs and son Milton a shed fire destroyed the storage shed and a two car garage while firefighters saved the barn. Tuesday an oil heater explosion at Kellog Tavern sparked a blaze threatening the interior.
Michael Schm idtgall celebrated his 10th birthday on a Friday evening with family and friends. A 6 30 p m weiner and marsh mellows roast near a bonfire, two birthday cakes, and gifts from aunts Mrs John Meeker and Mrs Fred Gregory followed. Prizes went to Billy Masters and Jimmy Hermann.
The four month limit for filing motor fuel tax refund claims for nonhighway use becomes effective November 1 1953. Legislation reduced the period from six to four months and the Director of Revenue says refunds can be paid within 30 days of receipt. The change aims to distribute claims more evenly and reduce the current twice yearly surge.
The couple wed on September 13 at the Methodist Church with vows exchanged by the bride and groom. The bride is Beryl Dean Hirst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William F. Hirst of Manito, and the groom’s details appear with the ceremony.
Mrs Anna Starrett left St Francis hospital on Sunday and is staying with her granddaughter Ray Lightbody and family at Glasford. Cards may be addressed to Glasford in care of Ray Lightbody.
Mrs Beulah Reynolds leaves Bloomington hospital and convalesces at the home of her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Norman White in the Forest City neighborhood. She will welcome visits from friends.
Mrs. Mabel Bilyeu and daughter Maxine of Curran visited Mrs. Ben Bilyeu and family on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hill traveled to Springfield on Saturday for a weekend visit with their daughter Dixie Rae Selke.
Long continued heat and drought have baked Illinois pastures in many localities so thoroughly that fall rains would probably not revive them for further grazing this season. About 40 percent of the expected winter wheat acreage has been sown, mostly in northern areas, while soy bean combining is well advanced with yields generally lower than last year.
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Beebe traveled to Altona on Saturday to attend funeral services for Miss Mary Brown, the aunt of Mrs. Beebe.
The state awards a contract to widen ten miles of U S Route 66 in Montgomery county to a four lane highway as the first unit of Gov Stratton’s Chicago to St Louis plan. Edwin Rosenstone notes over 41 miles of the road have been let in recent months and the Sherman to Lincoln eighteen and a half mile segment is finished and set for a ribbon cutting October 2.
Relatives including Chas. Smith and Mrs. Frank Snyder attended the service for Lena Deverman in Perry Missouri on Sunday marking the family gathering and farewell.
Mr and Mrs Francis Claypool and Pfc Byron Claypool of Greenview were Thursday evening dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Amos Thompson with Daryl and Joyce.
Notice posted in Manito on Tuesday evening informs voters of a special election set for October 20 1953 to approve a bond issue of 110000 for road purposes. More information will be available in next week's Express concerning the election.
The Barber Shop Sing will be held at Forman Gym starting at 8 PM on Friday October 9. Tickets are sold through Post or Auxiliary members and also at the door.
Gwen Lea Gilmore is the newborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gilmore of 346 Chestnut Street Pekin. The birth occurred at St. Francis Hospital Peoria on Sunday September 27. The family includes an older sister Gail Marie. The father is a former Manito resident, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gilmore.
A Rotary testimonial dinner honored Rev. D. J. Powell, past president, at Community Methodist Church. Organ music by George E. Ethell preceded the banquet. attendees included Rotary members, Rotarian Carl Weber, and Nelson Warner. Powell was praised for five years of active club service and a going away gift was presented.
Mrs. Virgil Pritchard and husband announce the birth of a seven and a half pound girl named Ronda Fay at Proctor hospital in Peoria on Wednesday September 30. A four year old sister Linda greets her arrival. The mother is former Dorthy Lesler. paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Marion Leffer.
On Thursday October 15 Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Ethell mark 68 years of marriage. The couple, in good health, tend their farm daily and stay engaged with national events as friends and neighbors join the Community Express in wishing them many more years together.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Endicott with Patty and Carol Jean hosted Sunday dinner in Havana for Mrs Luella Endicott and others. Mr and Mrs James Goodin and family from Bloomington visited Sunday afternoon.
