Fire Department Called Out Twice In Manito

Manito's fire crew answered two calls this week. Monday at the country home of Mrs. Charles Jacobs and son Milton a shed fire destroyed the storage shed and a two car garage while firefighters saved the barn. Tuesday an oil heater explosion at Kellog Tavern sparked a blaze threatening the interior.

Michael Schm idtgall Honored On 10th Birthday

Michael Schm idtgall celebrated his 10th birthday on a Friday evening with family and friends. A 6 30 p m weiner and marsh mellows roast near a bonfire, two birthday cakes, and gifts from aunts Mrs John Meeker and Mrs Fred Gregory followed. Prizes went to Billy Masters and Jimmy Hermann.

Four Month Period For Filing Motor Fuel Tax Refunds

The four month limit for filing motor fuel tax refund claims for nonhighway use becomes effective November 1 1953. Legislation reduced the period from six to four months and the Director of Revenue says refunds can be paid within 30 days of receipt. The change aims to distribute claims more evenly and reduce the current twice yearly surge.

Heat and drought bake Illinois pastures hard

Long continued heat and drought have baked Illinois pastures in many localities so thoroughly that fall rains would probably not revive them for further grazing this season. About 40 percent of the expected winter wheat acreage has been sown, mostly in northern areas, while soy bean combining is well advanced with yields generally lower than last year.

The state awards a contract to widen ten miles of U S Route 66 in Montgomery county to a four lane highway as the first unit of Gov Stratton’s Chicago to St Louis plan. Edwin Rosenstone notes over 41 miles of the road have been let in recent months and the Sherman to Lincoln eighteen and a half mile segment is finished and set for a ribbon cutting October 2.

Gwen Lea Gilmore is the newborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Gilmore of 346 Chestnut Street Pekin. The birth occurred at St. Francis Hospital Peoria on Sunday September 27. The family includes an older sister Gail Marie. The father is a former Manito resident, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gilmore.
