The Village Board met in a special session to discuss enlarging the water service area. Bonding company representatives who handled the waterworks bonds 13 years ago attended. Planned work includes extending mains to new village sections, adding a new well and pump as backup, with projected costs of 8000 to 10000 dollars.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Spaits in Forest City hosted an open house for the 40th wedding anniversary of Mrs. Spaits’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Peplow. Over 125 friends attended as grandchildren Roberta Bowman Glenna Mae Spaits and Donna Spaits provided music and helped with guest services.
The Manito church announces Sunday School at 9 45 a m Morning Worship at 10 45 a m Evangelistic Services at 7 30 p m with Rev John Reynolds a retired Peoria minister filling the pulpit. A new attendance register is in use and Lent features guest preachers special music and sermons on righteousness and the future.
On Sunday March 4 1950 Egypt Community Church schedules Sunday School at 10 a.m and Morning Worship at 11 a.m with Lawrence Whiteford and Joseph Hobbs referenced as leaders. The Catholic Church also lists Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the same notice.
Wanda Lowry daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy H Lowry of Manito has been selected by Manito Community High School as its DAR representative. She served in roles on the Orange Black and Man Hi An staffs and held leadership positions in class and club activities while participating in 4 H programs and local community work.
The Springlake 4-H Club will hold its regular meeting on Monday March 6 at Porter School. Sandwiches and soda pop will be served.
Beginning in March 1950 Palmers Market Singley And Fischer Vetter Grocery Vogels Market Zimmermans Grocery will close every Thursday afternoon until further notice. These four stores adopt a shared Thursday afternoon closing policy.
Mr and Mrs Howard Boyd hosted a Saturday night birthday party in honor of Mrs Stuart Thomas and Howard Boyd. Guests included Mr and Mrs Clyde Priddy and daughter Clarabelle, Mr and Mrs Stuart Thomas, Mr and Mrs Ben Cox, Mr Joseph Hobbs and mother, Mas Talbott, and the hosts.
Mr and Mrs John Frederick announce the birth of their grandson to Mr and Mrs James Frederick in Urbana Illinois. The infant Richard weighed nine pounds and was born February 22 Washingtons birthday. This is the first child for the couple. The Fredericks now have two grandsons and two granddaughters.
Lester Bernshausen shows satisfactory improvement while staying at home. Medical staff report steady signs of recovery as he continues rest and limited activity under supervision.
Mrs. Mabel Charlton hosted a Friday night shower for Mrs. John Charlton. Guests included Mesdames Wooding O Shea Cranwell Hall Mears Gilmore Vaughn Caulkins Spaits Roush O Hara Strawbridge Look Willard Cooper Moore Hill Farnam Lyons Mason Mason Parks and daughter Anna Ruth Charlton and honoree Jerry Lee Charlton. Bunco awarded prizes to Donna Thompson Mazie Moore Cranwell Willard Pearl Lee O Hara Florence O Shea Effie Cooper.
Leaders for the week include Barb ara Heyl Jeanette Parker Anna lee Proehl Beverly Proehl Steve Herrman and Jon Dee Proehl. Reports note absences and returning students plus community volunteers cleaning the basement painting benches and tables.
Mrs. Della O'Hara announces the engagement of her eldest daughter Miss Jean to Bill Shelabarger son of Mr and Mrs Cleve Shelabarger both of Manito. No definite wedding date has been set.
Mrs. Wilbur Grube of Manita was admitted to Pekin hospital on Monday for treatment.
Mary E Crosby known as Aunt Lizzie oldest Forest City Ill resident will celebrate her 94th birthday on March 3 1950. Widow of Vernon C Crosby a Egypt neighborhood farmer she was born to Matthew and Sarah Langston as the sole surviving child of eight. She moved to Forest City after marriage and later lived with her niece Elsie White. She broke a hip four years ago but now walks unaided. She has 15 nieces and nephews 83 great nieces and nephews and 15 great great nieces and nephews.
Saturday February 25 the 4 H and FFA held a sale in Champaign featuring five cattle breeds. One hundred dairy calves were sold with only organization members eligible to buy. Barbary Thomas daughter of Carl and Mrs Thomas Springlake purchased an Ayrshire calf. Attendees from Springlake included Mr and Mrs Haley Joyce Donny Mr and Mrs Carl Thomas Barbara Delbert Bauer Robert Wiker and Calvin Bauer.
The Youth For Christ group holds its regular meeting on the first Saturday of each month. On March 4 Rev. G. R. Magary will speak, known for strong preaching. Everyone is invited to attend at 7 30 p m.
Miss Wanda Sward led a major lesson on meal planning for Manita Home Bureau members at the Methodist church dining parlor. Co hosts Leona Graf and Nelda Meeker assisted. program planning and health and safety topics were covered. 36 members and four visitors attended the covered dish dinner.
Senior pictures arrived Friday and students eagerly awaited results. The Man-Hi-An sales began. class parties and a junior play are in the works. English, economics, shorthand, and typing studies progress as sophomores and juniors share notes on Napoleon, notebooks, and biology sense organs.

The Square and Round Dance sponsored by the 4 H Club at Forest City is postponed due to fuel shortages. David Stout, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Stout, celebrated his birthday on February 28.
Lucille Meyer of Manito High School earns the 1950 Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award Medal for top science scholarship. The award precedes eligibility for four $1,800 scholarships at the University of Rochester. deadline March 10 influences the early selection and requires three years of science. Meyer is active in 4-H and various school clubs and performances.
D J Powell a local Methodist minister attended the Illinois Conference Missionary Meeting in Peoria on Tuesday. He called it one of the best meetings in the area with five major addresses supporting five causes under the Advance for Christ four year program. Attendance exceeded 1000.
Community birthday notice lists Roland Maas on the 6th, Carolyn Maas on the 11th, Mrs Ethel Chesman, Darrel Runyon, Geneva Golden on the 14th, Mrs Roland Maas on the 24th, James Halpin on the 26th, Wayne Strawbridge on the 27th, and Mrs Theodore Bender and Earl Graif on the 28th.
Mrs Eva Wilson begins work at Monroe's Cafe after a few weeks vacation returning to regular duties Monday in a light local employment note.
A fire at the Spring Lake Pumping Station early today caused about 250000 in damages. The station serviced 10000 acres in the drainage district, keeping land dry for farming. Paul Woods and his son discovered the blaze around 330 am. their home was saved but a garage and tractor burned. Insurance covered buildings and two cars. four diesel engines and the 750 horsepower motor were damaged. Damaged station officials include Ties Velde Ralph Puterbaugh Mackinaw and Lawrence Rust Bloomington.
A coal shortage forces Forest City Grade School and nearby district schools to alter schedules. The two room Forest City school shuts this week. high school hours shorten and activities canceled. Other schools report varying coal supplies with some using oil furnaces.
Doris Ann Deverman and Clarence Bedine were married last Saturday by Reverend Schnelle at the Matanza parsonage. They will reside in a cottage at Matanza Beach. Mrs Bedine is the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Deverman of the Topeka Community.
Mr and Mrs John Meeker hosted a Sunday dinner for Reuben Golden and sons Sam Schmidtgal and Michael Folbert Maas Robert Maas and children Mrs Folbert Maas, recently ill, is reported to be recovering well Russell Maas and Randy visited in the evening.
Harold Gilmore fell Sunday afternoon in front of Bert Hills feed store and suffered a broken leg. He is getting along as well as can be expected and is now in Pekin hospital.
Mrs Helen Hocker formerly of Manito and sister of Mrs Bryan Johnson is reported in serious condition at Menonith Hospital in Bloomington Illinois with word of her health status reaching local residents.
Harvey Kastner and Bob Schumm spent Tuesday loading heavy machinery onto Kastner s truck but ran out of room leaving the load unsettled and the task incomplete.
The Star school community club will meet Friday evening. Each family is asked to take sandwiches and cookies.

Forest City native Winfield A Neikirk died in his Pekin room during the night of February 26 1950 at age 60. A World War One veteran and Caterpillar worker, he was known for mechanical skill and helping neighbors without pay. Survived by brother John R Neikirk and sister Mrs Rosamond Soares. Funeral held February 28 at Johnson Funeral Home with Rev Joseph Hobbs. burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. C A Beebe served on Grand Jury Monday.
