Vaccination advised to prevent cattle blackleg outbreaks
Dr. L. R. Bain of the University of Illinois Veterinary College urges vaccination of calves against blackleg on contaminated farms. Vaccinate before three months old and again at one year, ideally before disease exposure. Young cattle 6 to 18 months are most at risk. the disease can linger in pastures or buildings. If infection occurs, burn or bury deceased animals after proper disposal, and seek immediate veterinary diagnosis to distinguish from anthrax or malignant edema.
