Naval flyer crashes on takeoff near Manor farm

Donald Winship Jr., 21, a naval aviator from Pennsylvania, narrowly escaped death when his privately owned plane crashed on takeoff near the Herrman farm in Parkland community. He landed on a gravel road, refueled at the Herrman home, then proceeded toward South Pekin airport. He received medical treatment for severe facial lacerations and possible skull fracture at Pekin Public Hospital.

Reserve Corps unit operates in San Jose Illinois

The Organization Reserve Corps unit in San Jose Illinois trains Army Motor Truck Transport personnel. Established November 1949 the unit will use the TO&E and hold 40 enlisted and 10 officers. Current leaders include Cyril C. Gumbinger and Capt Laird D Folrath with training officer Capt Leslie E Mathers and others. A meeting is set at Gruensfelder's feed store in San Jose Monday night at 7 15.

Forest City Bible School closes with certificates awarded

The Forest City Baptist church hosts the closing program of its two week vacation Bible School. Sixty five pupils enrolled with thirty seven achieving perfect attendance. Certificates are presented by teachers as Rev. Joseph W. Hobbs leads the event and praises the organizing volunteers.

Fish Fry At Am Legion Hall Tuesday

Members of the Hill Palmer Post American Legion and The Auxiliary held a fish fry at the Legion Hall Tuesday evening. The Post furnished the fish and the Auxiliary provided salads and pickles. About 60 members attended. A second Fish Fry with bingo and card games is planned for July 7 with prizes from the Auxiliary.

Extension courses in Havana begin June 26 for teachers

The Illinois State Normal University extension director announces two Havana courses for teachers starting June 26 at Central School and Lutheran Parish Hall. The first course Physical Education for Elementary Schools 231 offers senior college credit. the second American Literature 182 covers 1855 to 1900. Each runs three weeks, five mornings weekly, with a $15 fee plus books.
