Caterpillar Tractor Co will close factories and offices from July 4 to July 19 with skeleton crews. End of third shift July 4. first shift returns July 20. About 1825 staff remain to maintain essential services and customer relations. Cafeteria and employee activities program shut. medical safety and insurance divisions operate on normal or abbreviated schedules.
Captain Joseph K. Gyalai MC of Manito Illinois attends a Brooke Army Medical Center course at Fort Sam Houston Texas. The program gathers officers from Medical Dental Veterinary and Medical Service Corps to study war medical service and combat procedures.
Mr and Mrs Harold Herrman and Janet returned from a vacation trip visiting Missouri and Kansas.
The Manito Rotary Club met in the Methodist Church basement with retiring president Rev. David J. Powell in charge. Members enjoyed a meat loaf meal and fellowship as the bell passed to new president W. L. Kerr. Powell spoke of a thrilling year and urged a return to old American paths centered on work thrift and worship.
Tuesday Mr and Mrs Beryl LeCount attended a family gathering at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Louis LeCount who were observing their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Bruce and Wilma Schimmel pfenning arrived home Saturday after spending two weeks visiting Mr and Mrs Sylvester Fuller in Amboy Indiana.
The Mobil station formerly Cole and Runyon in Manita has new ownership. Oron Zimmerman took over duties on Wednesday morning, July 1, and will operate the same automotive supply line once run by Vince Runyon and Bruce Cole, now renamed Zimmerman Service Station.
Word from England confirms to Ali and Mrs Donald Gebhardt that their daughter Mary Beth Gebhardt was born June 27 in the United States Air Force family. The baby weighs 8 pounds 7 ounces and joins Flora Kastner as mother, with Mary Beth's maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Kastner of Manita and paternal grandfather Andy Gebhardt of Pekin.

The Illinois State Medical Society Educational Committee warns that despite a fireworks sale law many will obtain fireworks illegally risking burns sight loss and limb injuries to children. It urges attending public displays for safe viewing and teaching children safety while enjoying the Fourth of July.

The Senior Girl Scouts sponsor a Friday afternoon story hour from 1 to 3 at the Catholic Social Center for children aged 4 to 7. On June 26 the event was led by Cleo Rae Hawkins Larrene Estes and Jo Ann Tisdale with twelve children attending and enjoying Kool-Aid cookies and potato chips.
Forman high school principal Mr. Beryl LeCount attends Bradley University for advanced education administration studies beyond his master's degree. The program runs through August 20 with focus on elementary education.
Mr and Mrs Gene Marquardt and son Brad returned from two weeks at Pine Beach Cobbins near Park Rapids Minnesota. Also vacationing there were Mr and Mrs Edward Marquardt Joan and Don of Pekin No injuries or incidents reported.
Premium books covering all divisions of the 1953 Illinois State Fair are now available, announced by Jame E. Tays general manager of the exposition. Copies may be obtained by writing the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. The fair runs August 14 to 23 in Springfield, marking the event’s second century as a leading agricultural exposition.
Judy Weyrich and Pamela Sue Cranwill stay with grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Paul Woods in Spring Lake. They enjoyed a Pekin park picnic on Sunday and later visited Peoria guests Mrs. Zelma Graffis and her daughter Martha.

The Spring Lake Charming Chicks 4 H Club met Tuesday June 23 at Mrs Leonard Erxleben's home. Mrs Hoehn gave a demonstration on how to put in a zipper. Refreshments of cookies and soda were served. The next meeting is scheduled for July 14 with refreshments to sandwiches and kool aid.
