Local Boys Start California Trek With Illinois National Guard Unit
Troops from Illinois National Guard's 44th Division entrain this week for Camp Cooke California with 15 special trains and some by car. The division, inducted February 15, will reach 17 000 personnel with Korean veterans and inducted men. 1st Sgt LeRoy Parkin leads Co H 123rd Infantry II, a Manito native who also served in 1941 with Co H 130th Infantry 33rd Division, Camp Forrest Tennessee. Several Manito soldiers including Pvt Billy Hamilton, Pvt Lyle Ingersoll, Bruce Meyer, and Max Schimmelpfennig join earlier arrivals from Peoria unit. High ranking officers Lt Col Ivor Dolph and Capt Glenn Gore, veterans of World War II, also departed with the group.

Death of Alva Caulkins in Dwight Veterans Hospital
Alva Franklin Caulkins, 56, a former Manito resident, died Monday in the Veterans hospital at Dwight. Born August 23, 1895 in Manito, he was married to Vera Stuart of Havana and leaves eight children, his mother, three brothers Cecil, David, Halbert, and four sisters. Burial followed in Rock Island National Cemetery.
