Mills County farmers pace corn planting progress

Mills County farmers planted corn rapidly last week and expected 95 percent by week end. Harlan Stratton reported to the Iowa Crop & Livestock Reporting Service as of May 25 that corn planting was 75 to 80 percent finished with stands at 85 to 90 percent of normal. Soybean planting lagged, with about half the acreage planted.

County licenses issued and marriages reported this week

The county treasurer lists new motor vehicle licenses involving F M Robinson and residents of Glenwood Emerson Plymouth and Omaha. Marriage licenses reported include Melvin Armstrong and Donna Bissell Raymond Volz and Geraldine Trively William Melvin and Ramona Lester Edwin Wolfe and Frances Weise Donald Yates and Ramona Olson Kenneth Hammer and Eula Buffington Dean Sulley and Colleen Rigg and Amy Hammers plans to attend the Iowa county superintendents conference at Spirit Lake for four days starting Monday.

Farmers Warned of Aphid Problems

Mills county farmers face two heavy aphid infestations, one on the Tom Davis farm near Malvern and another on the Hyde and Son farms north of Hastings. Yellowing leaves and plant withering signal the outbreak, with alfalfa cutting advised as the best control.

Ray's Shop Now Has Complete Footwear Line

Ray's Shoe Service of Malvern announces this week the installation of a complete line of Grimsrud shoes. The store will handle men's, women's and children's footwear in seasonal styles and canvaswear and tennis shoes. The shoe line is an addition to the shop's regular shoe repair business. Final Rites for Ira L. Turner Held Here Wednesday

Final rites for Mills County leader Ira L. Turner were held Wednesday at Malvern Methodist Church. Turner died Monday at Edmundson hospital after a heart condition. Services conducted by Rev. John L. Beechout with Masonic rites at the graveside. Turner served as Iowa State Representative, Rotary president, Farm Bureau active, and held church roles in Malvern, Hastings, Wesley Chapel, and Oakland. He is survived by his wife Allie five children fifteen grandchildren two great grandchildren two brothers and three sisters plus many relatives and friends.

Burglars Enter Two Places Over the Week End

Sheriff Don Hodden investigates two weekend break ins at Glenwood. O K Lunch suffered a Friday night or Saturday morning burglary with missing tools. Buffington Motors was entered Saturday night or Sunday with 367.25 dollars in cash and checks stolen. Both break ins involved a broken window.

Two Malvernians narrowly missed when their vehicles collided at the First Avenue and Evang Street intersection. B. E. Houser’s truck sustained minor damage while E. W. Burdic’s car suffered an estimated $400 damage.

Malvern Sales Up Slightly in County Quarter

Mills county sales tax receipts for the quarter ending December 31, 1956 totaled 47,740.64, down from 48,456.23 the prior year, with neighboring counties showing varied results. Iowa's overall tax payments rose to 20,043,834.83 from 19,776,788.33, while Malvern posted a slight gain amid a regional mix of increases and decreases across Fremont, Montgomery, Page, Tolta wattamie and other towns.

County Picnic Honors Max Cross and Family

Mills County Farm Bureau plans a county wide potluck to honor Max Cross and his family. Cross, a fieldman for two years, announced plans to transfer to the eastern part of the state. The picnic will be at the Malvern Gun Club starting at 6 39 p.m. on June 9, with all county residents invited.

New Youth Assistant Hired for Mills County

Richard McClure of State Center was hired as youth assistant in Mills County at the Extension Council meeting last week. He will graduate with an animal husbandry degree from State College in June and begin work June 20. He has eight years in 4-H and was a campus 4-H club member and lawn delegate to the National 4-H Club Congress four years ago.

Herdsman Hit by Car While Avoiding Cattle Near Glenwood

Glenwood herdsman Von Smith escaped injury Tuesday when struck by a car near the state school as he guided cattle. Sheriff reports Hud Johnson, driving to avoid the herd, lost control over a hill, car rolled, Smith was hit, Johnson unharmed.

Assessment increases on homes built since 1950 Mills County

Mills County board of equalization boosted the assessment on homes built since 1950 by 15 percent, citing underassessment of new houses and adjusting town by town. The board left small towns mostly alone, raised some in Malvern Emerson and Glenwood, and adjusted the Plattsmouth bridge by 50,000 while keeping Burlington bridge unchanged. The session lasted 10 days with limited public input.

Award Judgment of 5000 for Skahill in Auto Claim

A district court jury found Thomas Skahill entitled to 5000 against Joe P Doyle of Imogene. Skahill, administrator of Louis Patrick Skahill, fatally injured with Kenneth Doyle in a vehicle crash near Imogene. Jury deliberated hours, returning about 10 45 p m after 2 p m start.

Youth Forged Farmer's Name to Nine Checks

A 16 year old Pacific Junction junior is in sheriff custody after allegedly forging nine checks in the past month. Sheriff Don Rhoden said the forgeries used a Glenwood bank and the name of a local farmer as payee. Checks were written in Glenwood Nebraska City Bellevue Tabor and Malvern.
