Fertilization and forage tips for Mills county crops
Extension director Harlan Stratton advises on soil moisture from recent rain and suggests heavier fertilization for higher yields. Recommends adding phosphate after first hay cut, possible starter nitrogen for corn, and 40 lbs of actual nitrogen per acre. For silage, consider Atlas sorghum or forage sorghum with 8-12 lbs seed per acre. Sudan grass also viable with 15-20 lbs drilled or up to 25 lbs broadcast. Piper variety preferred.
