The State Conservation Commission reports a strong holiday hunting outlook for Iowa with pheasants and other game on tap. Goose concentrations run in the thousands along the southwestern and southeastern borders as newly cut corn fields provide feeding, while Mr Ringneck, Iowa's prized upland bird, is affected by the winterlike weather noted by game officials.
The Conservation Commission notes pheasants abandon solitary habits and seek shelter in larger groups, reducing hunter effort to midday cover searches while corn and bean fields remain prime in early morning and late afternoon. Quail hunting should rise as weather similarly affects birds. Hunters are urged to respect farmers on whose land they hunt to build goodwill and avoid harming future access.
