Home Happenings note a fresh stock of groceries at the Variety Store. A wide list of local residents and visitors from Mills County travel to Omaha and Council Bluffs for visits, fairs, and work. Numerous family moves, trips, and health updates fill the week as neighbors report travels, gatherings, and community updates.
B K Beech reports Madam Guerin, a native French speaker, will address Malvern residents next Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on the Cottage Hotel lawn about France and the wartime orphans. She aims to reach soldiers families and those with sons in service, citing a Shenandoah visit that raised 2500 dollars for the cause. Also notes local plans for a new Business and Normal College in Council Bluffs opening Sept 2, and an advertisement offering a nearly new piano and a $115 Victrola with finance options from A Mospe Company Council Bluffs Iowa.
Milton Ringer’s sister Miss Marie Ringer and Donald B White wed Aug 7 after hiring Rev. W R Moore. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Milton Ringer. The couple will reside in Omaha.
F. EB Mulholland traveled to Chicago Monday night to attend a bankrupted sale of a stock valued at a million dollars. He aims to buy selectively for his customers and will take a few days off, with side trips before returning home.
About fifty members gathered last Friday for the Strahan Sunday School annual picnic. Despite some absences the event was a success with a bountiful dinner and ample treats. The group enjoyed themselves greatly though heat lingered as they departed satisfied.
In a July 20 letter published by the Tabor Beacon Mann states he and his unit have just left the trenches and he is in fine shape. He asks readers not to worry if the casualty list shows a similar name W. N. Mann, as it refers to another man with nearly the same name. The rumor of his death is denied.
Mills County grocers held a joint session with the food administration in Malvern to discuss sugar matters. The sugar shortage is severe with many places out and others low. Sugar may be obtainable for canning under conditions, requiring fruit on hand and a stated canning need before locating a dealer with stock.
A Colorado bound farewell for Ray Wederquist drew about a hundred relatives and neighbors to the G C Wederquist home Tuesday night. Guests presented Ray with an evening of entertainment as cream and cake were served. Ray and G C Wederquist accompanied him home to Colorado, departing yesterday by auto.
The report lists several young men from local townships killed or wounded in action this week. Allen Pickeral, Clyde W. Munsinger, and Edward C. Riggle Jr. are among those dead. Munsinger died from wounds likely suffered on July 15, age 17, son of Mr and Mrs Albert Munsinger of Rawles township. Edward C. Riggle Jr. of Plattsmouth and Carl H. Jarvis of Burlington are among the wounded.
A towering Italian colonel visits the Italian sector in France, his massive presence underscoring Italy’s role on the western front. Italians there are performing well and cooperating with French forces to counter the German drive now underway.

Mrs Chas Luttz visited Emerson Thursday and Friday with Bert Combs and family. Mr and Mrs Ray Eichelberger from Malvern visited at Eichelberger and Ba Worcester homes. C L Hall and family away on two weeks vacation visiting Deg Moines Camp Dodge and Lake Madison Minnesota. News of July 21 Blue Springs Nebraska marriage of Hugh W Clipson and Miss Gertrude B Tal wall. Bride sister of Mrs Joe Oliver and well known here she taught in Anderson and nearby Bilver City areas. Mr and Mrs Clipson to live in Bilver City and teach public school next year. Will McRyhen from Camp Cody Deming NM Miss Uo McRyhan Malvern and Mrs Fi Bnacht Randolph were calling on Mrs Gail.
