Red Cross calls all interested to the Red Cross Room next Friday August 16 for a 2 to 5 meeting to discuss forming 4 classes to handle surgical dressings at the hospital. Mary A Jones chairs.
The Shenandoah Sentinel Postman writes about the Malvern fair noting a pretty good show and a loyal farmer crowd. He mocks airship stunts as outdated for the event and explains the town failed to hire an aviator this year.
After weeks of extreme heat and 110 to 112 degree days, a brief Sunday morning rain and a Tuesday night shower brought some relief. The rain helped dust but came too late for many corn crops. gardens mostly failed except where watered, with the drought stretching about fifty miles north and into Missouri.
About six hundred men from Iowa and Mills County are selected for August 6 duty at Camp Funston. The group includes Lee Sargent of Pacific Junction Gail Burgoin of Silver City and Albert Witl from Glenwood with others named for the draft dates.
A cheerful Malverk Yeomen group and guests attended the Hamburg event on August 8 with Mrs Oscar Brown Mrs Frank Bacon Mrs Nelfie Walkley Mrs Fred Shafer Harold Newsome and Ethel Buckingham among the attendees. The gathering was decorated and the party enjoyed a mild evening.
Jean Beattie's prize cake for the girls' fair victory is a war cake using no wheat or sugar. The recipe includes butter, corn syrup, maple syrup, eggs, melted chocolate, milk, baking powder, soda, vanilla, salt, and barley flour, baked as a leaf cake or two layers.
Strahan area couple Ray Milton Shaffer and Miss Anna Vanderpool were married Tuesday August 6 before Rev. Edwyn Evans in Glenwood according to the Glenwood Tribune.
Two young people from Plattsmouth Nebraska traveled to Glenwood on Tuesday August 6. After securing credentials at the Clerk's office they went to the Congregational Parsonage where they were married by Rev Edwyn Evans.
Infant Lucile Imogene Kline daughter of Mr and Mrs B B Kline born June 14 1918 died August 7 1918 aged one month and six days In memory a heartfelt prayer echoes the loss with hopes of reunion in Heaven for the precious child and family.
A list of draft registration officials is given with chiefs and assistants for multiple locations including Benton, Mineola, St. Mary, Hastings, Emerson, Deer Creek, White Cloud, Rawles, Glenwood, Center, Silver Creek, and Malvern. Registrations target men aged 18 to 45 to occur next month under designated leaders.
A damaged notice invites members to meet next Sabbath at 11:00 and to attend Sunday School at 16 00. It mentions a recent low attendance at a past service and urges a strong showing and active participation.
About twenty Malverti men autoed to Omaha Monday evening for an entertainment at the Ak-Sar-Ben den. They sat on the sidelines and watched others engage in a ride. The party returned home at all hours, from midnight onward, as they finally all arrived.

Examination for uniform county certificates will be held at my office in Glenwood Iowa on Wednesday Thursday and Friday August 28 25 and 30. The Malvern Public Library relays a Washington appeal from the American Library Association for more books for soldiers overseas. Demand focuses on new novels and Westerns by Zane Grey Rex Beach Jack London Ralph Connor Owen Wister and O Henry. Over 600000 books have been sent, with several hundred thousand more needed for six dispatch offices shipping to France. Books travel in strong cases aboard transports and naval vessels then are distributed in France by a librarian to Y M C A huts hospitals canteens chaplains and officers.
A veteran named Hammona died in France on July 20 1918 while serving with the Rainbow Division. He enlisted in the National Guard at Glens Wood in Iowa and served in Company I of the 168th Infantry. He rose to corporal and saw heavy action before his death. Memorial services are planned locally though full arrangements are pending.
At the fair last week Mr Ay Leonard of Corning showed eight Shropshire sheep from the Leonard flock. He praised his winnings and promised to return next year with more exhibits. Tom Markel, the superintendent, ensured exhibitors received proper treatment in his department.
The Iowa Library Comimidaida announces its annual exhibit in the ground floor north end room of the Women and Children's pursu ing division. The display highlights the Traveling Library, Library War Activities, Food Conservation books, and local soldiers records. Attendees are urged to visit and learn how libraries aid the war effort with free books and state provisions.
