Local residents shuffle to and from Malvern Glenwood and Omaha for fairs church services and visits. Photographs feature the 168th in Empress showings while others travel to Three Oaks Camp Dodge and three states for family and work. Notes on births deaths and military service pepper the week.
The Presbyterian Church will not hold preaching next Sabbath as the pastor takes 2 weeks of vacation. Sunday School will meet at the usual hour with a full attendance urged.
Yesterday morning a group of twenty three young men entrained for Jefferson Barracks Missouri including several Malvern boys. From one family two sons, Harry and Clyde Pace, left together. We wish them success and are sure they will make a good account of themselves.
Kirkland, west of Emerson, suffered serious injuries after a car driven by Mr. Patrick overturned near the White Cloud mill. Kirkland’s shoulder broke and his head was badly bruised. other occupants were only slightly bruised. A separate incident Saturday night saw Howard Strahan’s roadster roll over, lightly damaging the car while tarley Stevesson and Bob Boehner sustained bruises. The crash stemmed from a deep rut on a road recently worked near the H. A. Norton farm.
Mrs L W Miller hosted a Presbyterian ladies bible class and the Perseverance Band who, after a pleasant meeting, decided a flag in front of the church would enhance the area. A committee acted and purchased a flag that now waves daily. One man happened to be present at the ceremony by accident. The note praises the numerous flags displayed in Melvern parkings and townspeople applaud the display.
Rev. Howard Mintle of Glenwood will occupy the pulpit Sunday morning. A good attendance is desired.
The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Church met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. J R McClymond. A goodly number attended to enjoy the program. The subject was The Missionary Out Of Doors led by Mrs W P Wortman, and the session was noted as profitable and enjoyable with study of missionary work.
A crew has been busy grading and filling the north side of the bridge south of Little Creek while widening the structure and adding a footpath on the west side for pedestrians. The work will ease travel, especially during fair week when traffic is heavy.
Malvern native Clyde M. Deardorff, son of Mr and Mrs Joe Deardorff, is commissioned as second lieutenant after passing tests at the soldiers school in France. He went to France about four years ago with an engineers company and has seen substantial service.
Dedication of a service flag at the Christian Church in Malvern on August 11 at 11 o'clock features patriotic music and an address by W. B. Crandson. The flag will bear more than 40 names of boys in France or in cantonments bound for France. People with names for the flag should see Mrs. Ruth or Mrs. Walter Aistrope, committee on names. An additional service is at 8:30 p.m. with inviting, airy rooms and a hearty welcome.
Iowa Food Administrator J F Deems announces an open season on sugar hoarders starting August 11 with a return option for excess purchases by August 10. Field agents will inspect sales records, seize violators, and enforce penalties up to a 5000 dollar fine or two years in prison.
Ruth Law wowed crowds with two graceful flights despite a strong south wind as Mills County Fair opened. Tuesday’s results included Geo. Bingen winning the 2:27 Trot in 3:19 with Sorrento Bello second, Alta May third, and South Dakota Maid taking the 2:25 pace in three straight heats. Baseball, walking, and harness events complemented a day of competitive fairs and wartime exhibits, with Dr. Powell and Major Sanford of the British Army giving addresses in the evening.
William Meryhew spent a furlough at home and joined a large family reunion with his mother Mrs Belle Meryhew. Relatives gathered include Arthur Merghew and family of Tylesbury, Aaron and Ralph of Pleasantdale, Elishe Bowen of Queen City, Orville Faenacht of Randolph, and the Meryhew family members Tie Pearl Frank and others. The gathering marked the first time in many years all were together.
