Chicago General Secretary Russell says 25,000 operators will be out by night with near unanimous executive board support except President Small. Labor Commissioner Neill sees no settlement. Des Moines Grand Secretary Quick warns against fake messages from railroad telegraphers.
Three masters appointed by Judge Chamberlain of the superior court opened hearings to assess Mrs Mary Baker Eddy s competency in connection with a suit by next friends for an accounting of her finances The examiner Chandler declared the trust deed of March 6 shows incompetency and noted tax evasion in Concord He described Eddy s condition as the result of a series of delusions leading toward senile dementia.
Appleton Wisconsin reports the forming combine will include print and ground wood mills manilla paper and sulphite plants. George A Whiting of Whiting Paper Company Menasha confirms the deal aims to merge all wood based products into one large company. In New York stock traders note a much brighter tone with curbed liquidation and talk of a forthcoming conciliatory government statement.

Peru Ind Aug 14 Simon Ward airbrake inspector for the Chicago Cincinnati and Louisville railroad was found dead under a moving train. Whether the death was accidental or self inflicted remains a mystery as officials investigate the scene.
The annual meeting of the Society of the Army of the Philippines opened in Kansas City on August 14 with many veterans present. General Arthur MacArthur, commander in chief, presided over the gathering.
Topeka reports from August 14 state that Kansas will harvest about 4 percent of a normal apple crop. Severe late frosts and cold weather caused extensive losses to apples and other fruits. Peach, pear, cherry, and plum crops failed. grapes and berries fared better. Apple blooms occurred unusually early and cold nights plus snowfall damaged fruit. The apple worm will have fewer offspring next season, a hoped-for relief for growers.
New York reports Commander Peary may cancel his Arctic polar voyage this year as the steamer Roosevelt remains at Shooter Island awaiting necessary boiler replacements. With the ship not ready to sail by August 1, fitting out, coating and provisioning would push readiness to September 1, jeopardizing the winter quarters at Cape Sheridan and the expedition’s pole attempt.
A new pest, a weevil like the boll weevil, is destroying alfalfa in northern Utah. Professor E G Titus, state entomologist, notes the insect is entirely new to the region with no prior similar damage. Utah Agricultural College is testing a grasshopper catching machine, which has bagged fifty bushels in two days and ten bushels in three hours in different districts.
George Brush of Kentucky, aboard an International and Great Northern train into Palestine, was surprised while drinking whisky. A state ranger arrested him under the new train drinking law. He was jailed, fined $10, and released from the county jail under Sheriff Black.
The Wyoming land board announced the opening of 160000 acres of Aden Valley lands in Sweetwater and Fremont counties under the Carey act. Thirty thousand acres are now open for public entry. The irrigated land lies in the public domain and any person twenty one years old or over is entitled to a 160 acre claim.
In Los Angeles on August 14 a conference led Southern Pacific to agree all workers, including discharged boilermakers and helpers, be kept on payroll. The accord prevents a general strike on the Harriman lines and maintains labor peace.

Des Moines telegraph offices handle interstate business amid strike expectations.

Des Moines notes Col Lincoln of the Army of the Brown defeats Col Bishop and the Army of the Blue north of the city. Lincoln fortifies on a bluff to repulse Blues as mock invaders. Corporal Moraville is hit in the rim of his hat. Units will march into Des Moines and depart for home via the railway station.
