Whole-house fan may be an energy loser
College Station area article notes that whole-house fans save energy in summer but waste heat in winter due to poor air sealing. Texas A&M Extension Service expert Dr. Susan Quiring advises attic sealing options such as fiberglass batts and weatherproof framing. She notes attic boxes and weather stripping as possible but costly DIY solutions, and says fans can be common in older and newer homes for cooling but should be sealed in winter to avoid higher heating costs.
