The Dickinson area forms the Special Kids Booster Club to sponsor events and a summer day camp for mentally retarded youths. About 100 residents need support. donations or volunteer hours are welcomed, with tax deductible contributions and membership forms available by mail.
Texas City High School Student Council leads a school beautification effort. Dale Johnson and his vocational trades class built a brick planter in front of the school and moved the Stingaree marker into the planter. Drafting student Butch Beaulieu drafted the blueprints for the project as the first of several planned enhancements.
The Galveston Central Appraisal District Board of Directors will fill four seats on the Appraisal Review Board at its January meeting. Residents who wish to be considered must submit a resume to Hugh Landrum, chairman, by December 10. Eligibility requires district residency for at least two years. Resumes may be mailed to Hugh L. Landrum or delivered to 600 Gulf Freeway, Texas City.
TEXAS CITY The Great Books Discussion Group welcomes new members as it begins a January series with Chekhov’s Rothschildia’s Fiddle. Meetings are the first Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Moore Memorial Public Library. reading sets for 1937 cost $15.50. Call 948-3111 ext. 160 to join mailing list.
The Fourth Annual Charity Ball will be Feb 7, 1987 at Moody Civic Center in Galveston. Proceeds support Kiwanis projects like Special Olympics, Shoes for Underprivileged Children, and Child Protection Services. Tickets are $50 per couple, with hors d oeuvres and open bar, featuring The Contraband. co-chairmen Rita Pate and Henry Dowdy can provide details.
Youth director Danny Kauffman announces the 15th annual local Hoop Shoot at 10 a.m. December 13, 1986, in the Girls' Gym of La Marque Junior High. Students from Santa Fe Hitchcock La Marque Queen of Peace School and Texas City compete in three ages groups. Each child warms up then shoots 25 attempts. top shooter in each group earns first place along with a trophy and certificates. Winners advance to area state regional and national rounds.
Ardell and Harold Wilson of Pearland named Citizens of the Year for advisory board work and direct volunteer hours. Rick Shipley named Employee of the Year for Fairweather Lodge program work. Longevity pins awarded to Patsy Davis, Dorothy Ransom, Mike Winburn, Morna Flory, Jim Hall, Stella Wilkins.
The March of Dimes seeks volunteers for the Mothers March campaign in January to raise money for research and education and to distribute healthy baby guidance. Volunteers serve as leaders, recruit block marchers, and walk neighborhoods, aiding programs on gene therapy, preterm birth prevention, adolescent pregnancy education, health fairs, and support groups.
