A seasonable rain across the region last week boosted spring grain growth and promises a large crop at harvest. Farmers optimism centers on fall sown grain benefiting from the moisture, with hot winds in July feared but unlikely to spoil the yield.
Colfax Washington dispatch to the Oregonian reports a general rain last night and this morning across the Palouse, totaling about a half inch. Farmers hail the moisture as timely for spring wheat growth, raising prospects of higher grain prices and better yields in Whitman County.
NEW COUNTY ROAD party including A C Sanford J W Livingston and Max Loeddemann met County Roadmaster McLaughlin at the Lyle and Brown gap to review a section of the proposed road. They aim for a practical route to the Shaniko Trineville road crossing near Hayeroek with ranch owners agreeing not to object to the project.
Petitions for a fencing project with 1500 posts are being prepared today and circulated in Crosseys precinct where the road lies. Notices must be posted by June 4 to allow the petition to be presented at the county court on July 3.
J D Mayes invites all interested in improving the Madras Cemetery to meet next Monday morning for sagebrush clearing and necessary beautification work. The plot donated by Mrs N A Holt will be dedicated to the public. heirs of Holt will attend to formal dedication. Volunteers are asked to bring tools.
W E Guerin Jr president and J C Ellis GM of Pioneer Telegraph and Telephone Co visited Madras after acquiring lines from Jack Summers. The firm owns about 350 miles of line and plans extensions, including a new Burns Oregon line starting the 2th of this month. They expect improvements to the Madras bin system and a local exchange here with Agency Plains and southwest territory connected. Contracts are being solicited by Aes Clark who has joined the company.
Constantine J. Douris, a Greek, travels from Hood River to New York after establishing he is Leonidas J. Douris’s heir to an estate escheated to Oregon state. Through attorney A J Derby, Douris traces identity from Prineville records and a San Francisco contact, with court action to award heirs the assets valued at $75,000 to $100,000 minus debts and costs.
Crook County High School from Prineville defeated The Pallet High School in an interscholastic debate held last Friday evening. The Crook County team Luther Moore Reuben Rootey and David Pickett argued against arbitration with compulsory powers. The event showcased strong oratory from both sides and brought credit to their schools.
Two examiners of the general land office surveys have been assigned to Oregon to investigate suspended surveys and recent contracts. They will push to settle all survey matters, inspect tracts surveyed but not yet approved, and open them for entry, expediting settlement for settlers.
California man Charles M. Torokd signs a contract to produce six inches of rain between now and July 29 in Sherman County Oregon. He departs tomorrow to begin operations with farmers near Moro and Wasco hiring him.
