Salt Kills the Germs Spinal Meningitis Preventive Advised

Portland physician Dr. Wicks C. Penton endorses using a salt water spray to nostrils and throat as a preventive measure against spinal meningitis. He cites Dr. Flexner and Dr. S. Flexner’s findings that sodium chloride harms the meningitis germ diplococcus intracellularis, suggesting a two to four teaspoon salt per pint of warm water spray.

Cigar Case Lost by Grimes Freight Crew on Oregon Trail

A Grimes freight driver for Prineville lost a case of cigars valued around $135 on the road between Ante lope and Balters near Shanike. The Leys vanished after discovery of the loss. Henry Gimmes of Prineville headed toward the site to aid the search, while rumors say someone may have hidden the box for mischief or personal use.

Melvin cleared by judge in Dor rance homicide case

N A Melvin, accused of killing J Dor rance in the Bistess neighbourhood last fall, was discharged by Judge Brad. The decision releases Melvin from further trial steps, ending the case without a conviction.

Grand jury exonerates Melvin in Prineville shooting case

In Prineville last week the grand jury exonerated Melvin after an inquiry into the affair. Dorrance was shot by Melvin following threats against the latter and attempted to carry them out. the grand jury found Melvin acted in self defense as claimed.

Brown to Start Large Scale Chicken Farm in Local Area

Thorence F. E. Brown, who recently claimed land from Tom Malloy's homestead entry, plans to establish an extensive chicken operation here. After a trip to Tortland, he will return in about three months to set up, starting with 200 to 2000 hens and scaling to thousands as markets expand. Brown cites Petaluma as a model with large ranches and asserts this region could become a strong egg and chicken producing district for Northwestern markets. Local production already serves county markets, with limited outside sales from Shaniko and Crook County towns, but no prior outreach to broader markets.

New Officials Take Office at The Dalles Land Office

The United States Land Office at The Dalles resumes regular business with newly appointed officials having qualified. With the removal of Register Nolan, joint actions resume and pending proofs will be processed. The Eugene and Eastern Railway Company proposes electric lines from Eugene to Springfield and from the McKenzie River Valley to Prineville, tapping timber and mineral districts. Davenport brothers buy Jersey cattle at Burkett ranch sale

The Davenport brothers bought about 80 head of Jersey cattle at the Burkett ranch auction last Friday and Saturday. They plan to move stock to their Crook county farm near Bend and expand into large scale stock raising with horses sheep and cattle. Mark Davenport leads management, with 400 acres of alfalfa hay and anticipated high quality breeding. Townsite lots in Madras will be marketed until June 1 at current prices before price increases.

Survey at Clackamas River Signals Possible Estacada Extension

Estacada News reports surveyors for the P RL and P company are staking pages along the Clackamas River above Casadero. The line extends several miles, shifting from a timber line to a main river route, reviving belief of a Cascade Range crossing railroad. New Stage Station Established on Westside Route

J. Wenandy, manager of the Bend Madras Shaniko Stage line, is in town seeking a stage station at Youngy to shorten relay times between Maight’s and Madras. He says no contract for the new mail service has been awarded yet but expects one by month’s end.

Acquittal in Bend Horse Larceny Case

Oliver Erickson of Bend was acquitted by the circuit court in Prineville after a 16 hour jury deliberation on larceny of a horse. The first trial last week ended in a hung jury.
