In Prineville Oregon a jury found C Bam Smith guilty after a 15 hour deliberation. The verdict followed testimony implicating Eliiett the principal witness and a government promise of immunity. If approved a new trial may be sought. appeals to the Supreme Court are likely.
In Prineville on May 11 the defense in the C. Sam Smith case moved for a week he was denied by Judge Judy Bradahat who then imposed four years in the penitentiary. Smith gave bond raised to four thousand dollars and is at liberty. State witness Larkin Elliott received a like sentence and will be taken to Salem Wednesday.
Mr A A Elmore spoke to Madras farmers about the Educational and Co operative Union and its aims. Mud Springs held a meeting last Saturday electing GL Paxton president P R Hastie vice president W J Stebbins secretary treasurer James Lee chaplain and others. The union begins with 16 members and will meet alternately at Mud Springs and Madras on the 24th and 4th Saturdays each month. An Agency Prairie branch formed Mt Jefferson Union with 57 members electing H J Hranstetter president Wim Harner vice president A D Anderson secretary treasurer and W W Gard chaplain.
L Lafollette Prineville and P E Weston of Stockton representing Holt Manufacturing arrived in Madras to study feasibility of operating the traction freighting engines. They toured farming country tributary to Madras and noted no insurmountable obstacles, though substantial expense would be required to upgrade roads. A definite decision was expected within a week.
Drizzling rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning steadied into the heaviest shower in five or six months. The rain improves crop prospects and boosts spirits as farmers predict a good yield for the area. Local reports mention a chase in Sherman and stray cattle, but the shower is widely welcomed.
The dry farm homestead bill is pressured in committee as differences between the House and Senate versions threaten its passage. Key disputes include state exemptions, residence waivers, and the ability for current homesteaders to add land within a total 820 acre cap. A Washington dispatch notes ongoing negotiations to resolve these issues.
A jury was selected in the Smith and Biath case charging arson at the Wijkapigon shearing plant and related wire fencing damage. After swift voir dire the panel included Walter Hite and J F Taylor among others from Lamonta Prineville Bend Culver Redmond Madras and Bear Creek with eight jurors ultimately seated.
