The two day rabbit hunt drew perhaps 100 participants and yielded about 300 rabbits slain. Drivers struggled with long drives, poor conditions, and rabbits using sheltered spots as storms approached. Indians aided in the drive and ranchers plan another attempt on December 28 near John Trotter’s place in Bagebrush Springs.
The Madras district approved a 15 mill levy for the current year to cover expenses after adding 9th and 10th grades. About 141 school age children live in the district and the levy, based on a property valuation around $82,000, funds roughly $1000 in extra costs plus incidental expenses. The measure passed with little opposition and aims to sustain local schooling.
Secretary Garfield's Interior Department issues a rule effective December 1 shifting timber land sales from a fixed $250 per acre to appraised value based on location and quality. Applicants must estimate timber amount and value with a 30 day preference right, and if appraisal is delayed nine months, the entryman may pay his own appraisal, but land cannot sell for less than $2.50 per acre.
Pendleton Or December 11 January is to spend death to the coyotes in Oregon plans announced by Secretary Dan P Smythe of the State Sheep Commission and the State Woolgrowers Association. During the coming month flockmasters will wage a concerted warfare using dogs guns traps and poison to reduce coyote numbers in the 31 days designated for slaughter. The same plan was used last January and hundreds of coyotes were killed according to reports from across the state.
A nine acre tract adjoining the townsite on the East in Madras was sold by A. L. Phillips to Jack Dee and Sam Compton for 50 dollars per acre. Mosars Compton and Dee plan two cottages and aim to plat the land as an addition to Madras as rapid growth continues. The buyers operate a sawmill at Grizzly and will construct the cottages in Madras.
County Commissioners Rice and Bay ley and County Superintendent Ford with County Judge Ellis visited Bend schools to assess efficiency against the county high school. If Bend meets standards, the city would be relieved from the tax for the county school. final decision not announced but expected favorable.
Thursday a heating stove in the South grade row toppled in a public school, scattering embers but not injuring pupils. Teacher Miss Jessie Hartley kept calm, directing older boys to handle the danger and extinguish cinders without alarming others.

Survey crews from Harriman and Mills camp at Redmond and Madras report lines run from Madras to Redmond with two potential crossings on Crooked River. Mrs Ella V Rodman wife of Frank Rodman died Sunday morning in a Portland hospital after an appendectomy. Daughter of Jacob Stroud she had lived near Prineville and Madras before moving to Portland two years ago. She was about 26 and leaves her husband a son Van and many relatives.
