Officials announce a promised road project for central Oregon with officials clarifying its determination and expected impact on local communities and transport. The decision follows community discussions and regional planning input from state and county authorities.
Eastern Oregon works toward a self built line to move wheat, livestock and wool to market. E H Harriman promises to start construction south into Central Oregon within sixty days after Pelican Bay conference with Julius Kruttnichnitz and others. Ground will be broken soon as route is chosen and funds stabilize amid post panic constraints. Governor Chamberlain and Fred Stanley expect a new steel highway to Oregon amid discussions of route along Deschutes canyon or Shaniko branch.
President Roosevelt establishes a national bird preserve combining Lower Klamath Malheur and Harney lakes in Oregon. The Audubon Society pushed for protection to halt slaughter for plume markets and create breeding and nesting grounds for wild fowl in the Narrows, a key duck-hunting area.
Madras will open its public school on September 14 with a larger enrollment expected. New 6th and 10th grades are added, as well as increased faculty including Prof. P. C. Fulton as principal, Prof. W. St. Cook, and Miss Clara Horney.

The Union Meat company of Portland and Seattle firms shipped about 10 carloads or 1200 head of Nebraska hogs via Pendleton to coast markets and slaughterhouses. Meanwhile Reinhold Harras moved 400 head from the Athena district to Pasco. Hog prices ranged from 5 to 6 dollars per hundred on foot with implied profit to shippers.
