Railroad surveyors return to Madras from Culver
The Central Oregon survey team camped at Culver for a week resumes work in Madras and will likely move on to survey between Madras and Shaniko along the old Columbia Southern route. Robert Rea leads the expedition and says a viable, easily constructed line could run from Madras to Trail Crossing with Crooked River crossing costs reduced.

Timber Fires Damage Warmspring Reservation Timber
Forest fires burned extensive timber on the West side of the Warmspring Indian reservation near the Clackamas river headwaters. At one point the front was seven miles wide and spread rapidly before firefighters and rains tamed the blaze. About 40 Indians were drafted from harvest fields to help fight the fires. Timber on the Warmspring reservation extends to the Cascade mountains.

Water rose to 87 feet beneath the surface. several bottles contained oil specimens. One bottle held clear oil, another was mixed with water. the oil resembles coal oil in appearance. A coal vein drifted into the bore just before suspension, with samples brought up in the muck. Officials plan further testing to gauge coal vein thickness while resuming oil work after equipment arrives.

Horse kicks nearly harm shoemaker in street incident
J. Wilson a crippled shoemaker was nearly kicked by a young horse he was breaking. The animal ran toward Main street after turning in a stable yard. Wilson fell from the cart but was rescued with a severely cut hand and a damaged cart.
