Survey Line Through to Shaniko Planned by Central Oregon RR

Survey teams move from Culver toward Madras then southwest through Opal Prairie toward the Crooked River crowing near Trail Crossing. The line may extend to Shaniko via Ward's Creek and Shaniko flat with possible Antelope route study. Construction could start if subscriptions and preliminaries meet goals.

Pine Timber Burns on Upper Deschutes

Lightning sparked several fires in the yellow pine timber south of Bend, Oregon. Fires spread quickly due to dry conditions with rain absent for weeks, prompting Bend crews to assist forest rangers. A timber claim owned by W F King of Prineville on Sugar Pine Mountain was reported totally destroyed, with heavy smoke lingering for ten days.

Promoters Visit Condon Rail Line Plan Shown

A party of railroad men connected with a proposed electric line from Condon showed blue prints in Madras. The route crosses the John Day river near Antelope with a Trout Creek branch into Ashwood country. The company may start construction soon as water rights along the Deschutes and John Day are filed. The visitors departed Friday for Prineville and Bend.

BIC SUM FROM NATIONAL FORESTS ALLOTMENT

Oregon will receive 82318.82 as her share of receipts from national forests during the past fiscal year. Formerly states where forests were located received 10 percent of gross receipts but the last congress increased the share to 25 percent. The law requires that this money be spent for public roads and schools by the counties in which the forests are located. The article questions how counties are compensated for loss of taxable territory caused by forest reservations.

Bend Saloon Keeper Charged With Arson

A Bend saloon keeper known as Frenchy was bound over to the Circuit Court in $2500 bonds on arson charges. He allegedly burned liquor stocks valued at $4000 with $2000 insurance. Justice O Connor set the bond, and failure to post sent him to county jail amid a strong case claimed by officers.

Threshing Machines Burn in Umatilla and Waiteburg Fires

Three threshing machines burned in Umatilla county this threshing season amid smutty wheat concerns. Isaac Christopher near Adams saw his running machine explode and burn with almost total loss, no insurance. Frank Brotherton’s machine near Vanscocle ignited while moving between settings. A third fire occurred on the Heddeman place near Helix with few details. Separately, Frank McGhee of Waitburg, Washington, lost his thresher and 200 acres of grain to a smut explosion spreading in a breeze.

Minister Targeted by Dynamite Threat in Prineville

A Prineville minister Rev A Housel who hunted for liquor sales received an anonymous dynamite threat. The note warned to mind one’s business and claimed dynamite is cheaper than property tax. Another minister Rev J T Moore left for a Tillamook pastorate and has not seen the letter.

Baldwin Sheep & Land Co. wool sale at Shanhike

About 250000 pounds of Baldwin wools were privately sold last Friday at Shanhike. George Abbott, representing Botany Worsted Mille, bought the clip for around 16 cents per pound. The sale was conducted privately by J. G. Edwards, manager of the company, and did not involve public wool sales at Bhaniko.

Men Wanted to Fight Forest Fires Near Bend

Bend faces rapid forest fires south of the city with Deschutes Lumber Company timber at risk. A telephone call from Madras sought 40 laborers for immediate firefighting duties with wages of 2.5 dollars per day plus board and transport to Bend. Fire spreads due to no rain for a month and limited patrols by large operators.

Forest Fire Ravages Paulina Mountains In Oregon

Fire reports describe a major blaze in the Paulina mountains within Fremont National Park Crook county's large stock district. Supervisor Ireland notes widespread East slope fires across the Cascades from the Columbia river toward the California line, mostly lightning caused and easier to control due to sparse brush.

Ford takes post as county schools chief remarks on institute

R A Ford new county superintendent of schools begins duties and explains no date for the teachers institute will be set until after the Salem convention September 10 11. He hopes state superintendent Ackerman and other educators attend the Crook county event and will announce local dates on his return from Salem. Also reports Prineville residents aiding ranger fire crews in the mountains including Comba Wuerzweiler Claypool Jordan and Hyde with wages noted.

Klamath Falls Promoter Seeks Central Oregon Rail Control

Crook County Journal notes Hill of Klamath Falls visiting Bend with aims to take over management and promotion of the proposed Central Oregon railroad. He plans to visit Madrag and Prineville. General Manager R Howard of Deschutes Irrigation & Power Co leads the railroad movement and must be consulted on plan changes. Hill’s prominence likened to James J. Hill fuels speculation across Oregon.
