Chief of Staff March releases figures showing 36154 killed in action or died of wounds, 14811 died of disease, 2204 unidentified deaths, 179625 wounded, 2163 prisoners and 1160 missing. First units to return include 31st, 34th, 38th, 39th, 76th, 84th, 86th and 87th divisions. Occupation aim is Coblentz by December 1.
William Gibbs McAdoo resigns as Secretary of the Treasury and Director General of Railroads with President Wilson accepting the move. He plans to vacate the Treasury portfolio after a successor is named, staying as Director General of Railroads only if no successor is chosen by January 1. The change shifts wartime finance duties to the new secretary during the transition to peace. Letters reveal McAdoo cites personal fortune needs and the President laments losing his son in law from the cabinet.
Data alleging extravagant spending in the Michigan Senate race against Henry Ford was submitted to the Senate Committee on Privileges and Elections by Elbert H. Fowler secretary of the Ford-for-Senator Club. Fowler said Michigan caps campaign spending at 25 percent of one year’s salary and that Newberry’s managers spent about $500000.
