Pat Whalen of near Colchester reported losing a Ford touring car on West Jackson street by St. Pauls church but two young men returned it hours later and fled before capture. The incident sparked speculation the car was driven to Colchester from Macomb after which the culprits vanished. Beardstown beat Lewistown 13 to 0 to open football season with Macomb players Strickland Hesly and Knott among those gearing up for the Independent team later this season.
The McDonough County Orphanage expresses sincere thanks to Mrs. James Burrows of Colchester for a ten cent donation to the orphanage.
Cail Lesher once of Galesburg and now in New York City escaped a blast near the Morgan block last week. He was nearly at his office when the explosion occurred while en route to meet a gentleman friend and had an appointment that morning.
Several concrete culverts are to be installed this week at the expense of the county under the supervision of Highway superintendent W. M. Bonham. Contracts were recently let. Geo. Thompson of Vermont begins work today on two concrete jobs in Eldorado township and J. R. Stevens of Kirkwood will start on a culvert near the Hamilton corner on the Warren McDonough county line. The county grading outfit has been working north of Macomb and will finish that highway after another day. Work will start on the east road out of Macomb to the Douglas corner then move to the south road to John Jones place. The west road will be graded last to Colchester town line.
An early morning fire at the rear of Mrs. Eliza Cordell’s six room house in Industry, near Decker drug store, destroyed most of the structure. The loss is partly insured for about 700 to 800 dollars. Mrs. Cordell was visiting in Littleton, leaving no one home. Neighbors discovered the blaze, which may have started from a flue spark after Friday supper. Practically all furniture was saved.
Andrew Lafin Socialist candidate for Illinois governor will speak at the court house tomorrow at 8 p m on leading problems of the day. All citizens are urged to attend to learn Socialist principles and hear the opposing views. Ladies voters are urged to attend and vote for Lafin.
In a By-Stander subscription note Mrs. M. L. Wiserd, formerly of Macomb and now in Bonner Montana, praises local country. Grace Barnes of Tennessee visits the Wiserd home to teach nearby, as the pair recount mountain trips after early frosts in a season noted for beauty.

Eight extra veniremen were summoned as the McDonough county court prepared a jury for Ernest Warden charged with check-forgery against Macomb merchants. The panel includes Warden’s case jurors and other local residents. the court mulls over a release petition for Danleyh, claiming street labor debt and deteriorating health.
