J. E. Wilson Enters GOP Sheriff Race for 1922 Primary

J E Wilson former deputy sheriff under E L Sapp formally announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for sheriff in the April 11 1922 primary. He joins three other contenders John Burke Will Camp and Ira Atkinson as GOP hopefuls in a race noted for factional divisions within the party.

Prisoners With Noted Criminal Records From Joliet Transfer

A letter to the Sheriff from Joliet State Prison identifies two inmates sent to Joliet in September from McDonough County. Fred Howard has a prior burglary sentence of one to fifteen months from the Columbus Ohio Penitentiary for attempting to rob the I P W depot at Gushnell. Fred Mitchell, linked with Conroy in burglaries of Melvin Bros and others, has prior incarcerations in California and New York and in Ohio. Conroy remains unidentified.

Moose Lodge Plans Wednesday Celebration With Guests

Members of the local Moose lodge announce a pleasant evening this Wednesday with guests from the Bushnell and Plymouth lodges. Officers say plans include a notable program with a fine menu followed by speaking and music.

Negro bandits shoot up Monmouth grocery store

Three armed Black men raided Zack Twyman’s store in Monmouth on Saturday night, ordered him to surrender, but Twyman reached his gun and shots rang out. A bullet pierced the chair Twyman sat in. the bandits fled and were not captured.

Red Cross Roll Call Opens November for Veterans Aid

Mrs. F. W. Brooking leads the Macomb chapter as Red Cross Roll Call runs from Armistice Day November 11 to Thanksgiving November 27. Local support is expected to exceed last year to fund disaster relief, soldier care, and national emergencies. The campaign notes more than 10 million dollars spent locally and nationally this year, with fifty cents from each sustaining membership supporting disaster relief and soldier work. Plans for Roll Call activities will be announced soon.

Paris reports from the allied council say former Emperor Charles troops close on Budapest with little resistance to restoration efforts. Vienna rumors claim Charles already entered the city, though a news agency disputes the reports.

Senate defeats amendment to tax measures

Washington reports the Senate defeated 46 to 28 an amendment to the tax revision bill. The proposed change would lower the normal income tax to two percent on the first 5 000 dollars, four percent on the second 5 000, and six percent on the third 5 000, according to Stander.

Gamage Stars For Illini In Wisconsin Clash At Urbana

Harry Gamage of Macomb, son of John Gamage, played much of the last half for Illinois in the football game against Wisconsin at Urbana. A regular substitute, he started at guard and held the Badgers’ line at several stops. The crowd gave him a warm ovation as he entered the Illini lineup.

Court finds for defendant in auto collision suit

Justice of the Peace A W Falkenthal ruled for the defendant in a $300 damage suit by Frank Slinman of near Adair against W S James after an automobile collision east of the city. The judge found both drivers equally to blame and dismissed the case with plaintiff paying costs. Also noted are travels of Cy Weather returning to Pueblo after a visit with relatives in Colorado.

Plymouth Man Hurt in Fall From Barn

Plymouth, Oct. 24. Christopher Garrison suffered three broken ribs a broken nose and several severe cuts to the face when he fell about twenty three feet from a barn on the Vail farm near Industry. He was taken to Macomb hospital but returned home Saturday.

The four major railroad brotherhoods and the switchmen union warn the United States Labor Board that only a satisfactory settlement can prevent a nationwide strike set for next Sunday.
