Attorney General faces accusation of firing honest investigators. DAUGHERTY and others linked to alleged war grafts provoke a regional political blaze as factions clash over accountability and protection.
Arkansas Senator Caraway accused Attorney General Daugherty of being used by unnamed backers to cover up government swindles and to reinstate a pardoned physician tied to the Morse affair. Caraway demanded full immunity waiver and warned the cabinet may be used for political ends, citing a letter from an undisclosed public official.
A gale gust in Galesburg caused a bird to become trapped in a tree near Neo Tompkins Street. Mrs Edith Inmane notified authorities as workers from the telephone company who assisted in the rescue removed the bird safely two hours after the incident.
Mrs Emma Ragon reports 1919.79 raised in McDonough County for Near East Relief. Organizations and individuals contributed with Blandinsville Good Hope Macomb schools clubs churches and committees totaling 1830 remitted to Chicago and a 89.79 balance on hand as of today.
The Military Track High School Athletic and Declamatory association holds its annual member meeting Friday in Elmwood. Fifteen high schools compete including Yates City Farmington Lewistown Rushville Knoxville Stronghurst Abingdon Aledo Alexis Rose Ville Biggsville Bushnell Macomb Norman Academy Elmwood. Strong teams are expected to challenge for top honors with Stronghurst boasting Putney and Knox ville with Tarpy. Macomb and Elmwood also field strong squads as Carter and Elmwood’s McDonough county winners aim to score heavily.
Rushville May 4 A rumor from Schuyler county grand jury sources claims 30 true bills were voted though not officially confirmed. Report suggests indictments prepared by Saturday morning and possible transfer of 29 inmates from Jacksonville jail to Rushville for immediate arraignments.
Jurors returned no indictments contrary to county officials’ morning statement that indictments might be issued. The unexpected action surprised local authorities and observers awaiting formal charges.
Seven ex service men listed by name from Helms hospital annex will be moved soon to the newly completed Maywood government hospital for treatment. The Holmes hospital contract remains in force and government patients will be treated there. The named men have been under care the longest at Helms.
W T Tanning of Blandinsville has begun a taxi service between Blandinsville Seiota Good Hope and Macomb. The service plans two trips in seven passenger cars. A separate item notes Ben Anders’ Chevrolet touring car lost a wheel near the post office due to a broken spindle bolt, causing no serious damage.
The burglar visited multiple North Randolph Street homes including Attorney Tra J O Harra and the Curran residence. A purse was taken at one house. footprints and burned lucifers traced the intruder, who entered Lundberg Hainline and Curran homes by unlocked doors and a front window. Clothes were disturbed at the Timdbere home but nothing seized.
William Patterson of Ma comb bought the 155 acre Barley farm east of Ma comb for 290 dollars an acre. Possession will be given March 1. Patterson now owns about 820 acres in a single body. Sale arranged by N A Asplund, real estate man.
Miss Donna Phillips Etter, nurse in training at Holmes hospital, who had been critically ill, is much better and high hopes for her recovery are entertained.
The constitutional convention debated re apportionment and a plan to appoint Illinois officials if the legislature fails to act. Former Governor Fifer and Delegate Elting opposed, while Moore, Cutine, Teavert argued it would keep the state functioning amid alleged legislative neglect by cheap politicians.
The Child Welfare club honored Miss Cora Hamilton of the teacher college at a dinner party Tuesday evening at Mrs. E. Yard's home on East Carroll Street. A delightful time was enjoyed as Miss Hamilton will leave for California at the end of the summer term.
Robert Cain known as Bob teler at the First T and Savings Bank marks his 21st birthday today. The event is noted amid local chatter and By-Stander ads as a milestone in his growing presence in the community.
Waukegan May 4 jurors chosen to try Governor Small on conspiracy charges halted after Judge Edwards opened inquiries into rumors of jury fixing. The dismissal of Henry T Carey an automobile salesman followed a state challenge. Edwards said nothing public could be disclosed.
An Irishman with no arms drives a car using feet and teeth to open a rear lock and steer. He travels about twelve thousand miles selling lead pens and small items, showing remarkable dexterity and resourcefulness in operating the vehicle.
