A Harding campaign candidate loses in Indiana as a jury considers indictments against alleged riot instigators. The developing case centers on actions tied to unrest observed at a recent demonstration.
The article reports lawman Kelly favored as successor to Sheriff Lashbrook by the county board and notes indictments against Lashbrook and deputies were unlikely. It recounts a shooting incident at Verill's party and the subsequent arrest of suspects, including Dickis, with tense crowds and a county jail transfer.
A Sunday night crash on the Lincoln highway killed two people. The second victim was Edward Wil of Batavia, while the first victim was Mind Lark, 24, of Aurora, a passenger in a vehicle without lights. An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
A house burglar using matches to light the night has entered several Macomb residences. Most recent victim Mrs. M. E. Roark, 407 East Jackson, found the purse with a $10 bill missing near a tree by the Second Ward school. Four senior high play tickets were discarded. matches left behind indicate the suspect’s method. Previous houses tied to Ed Cochran and James Beddows also suspected.
A large attendance filled Holmes Park last night for an Elks relief benefit for Beardstown residents. Campbell's orchestra and The Nomads of Jazzland provided music, donating services. The rink and hall were donated and in excellent condition for the event.
An out of town orchestra will play at the big dance Friday night at Thlmes park. Management expects a large turnout and lively entertainment for the event.
A jury for Governor Simall’s conspiracy trial was expected to complete today as the final panel was offered to the defense. State witness lists grew with forty names, including Leslie Small and Mrs Curtis, while the first jurors were excused for bias or educational test results. Mrs Small attended, watching the process beside the governor in a sparsely populated courtroom.
Theodore Black district engineer based in Peoria visited Macomb to inspect northbound hard road grading. Rain has slowed work but preparatory steps advance and full heavy grading awaits better weather. Black expressed thorough satisfaction with progress.
Macomb High School presents The arrival of Kitty as its senior class play at the Illinois Theatre. Dress rehearsal completed with no glitches and the Illinois Theatre Orchestra will provide music for the performance. Curtain rises Thursday night with strong home talent expected to please the audience.
A Bartleson household reports a cat with three or four kittens accepting a two thirds grown rat. The mother cat licked the intruder and placed it with her brood. She later played with it and carefully returned it to the box.
At a December board meeting the Macomb Commercial Association announces a Sunday 2:30 pm car trip for about 300 volunteers to view the proposed Maromb city water reservoir site. The group says it seeks no stance and will respect voters’ judgment after explanations at the site.
Residents of Macomb and vicinity contributed about 1500 to aid Beardstown flood victims. The final payment was sent today to the authorities for distribution. The Commercial Association raised about 800 and the Elks about 400 from a benefit dance. Half of the latter was sent to Beardstown’s Elise club for immediate use. Additional donations are expected to reach the 1500 goal.
A jitney dance is set for Friday night at Jolly Tall. The Nomad orchestra will perform with an added banjo for the event.
In Indianapolis on May 3 former Governor Samuel M. Beveridge leads Senator New by 14 668 in the Republican primary as 2 318 of 3 383 precincts report. Beveridge 127 198 New 115 545. In the Democratic race former Governor Samuel M. Ralston holds a heavy edge with 64 498 to Lan W. Simms 10 530 after 1 114 precincts tabulated. Beveridge backs Bull Moose stance. New is Harding administration ally.
Several patients recover after operations. Florence Doerr at St Francis for acute appendicitis shows improvement. Mrs Lawton and Mrs White note varying recoveries after recent procedures. John Torrence and Mrs Whiting recover from heavy operations. Others return home or improve after appendicitis or fractures. Names include Banks, Waner, Parelay, Wayland, Kerby Whiting, MacLeren, Hartman, Blackledger, Follin, and Champion with residences in Plymouth Carthage Elmwood Adair and Avon.
