Socialist leader Eugene Debs, imprisoned for violation of the Espionage Act, held a private conference with Attorney General Daugherty in Washington to discuss his case. State lawmakers clash over pay rates for ex service members as amendments cut Red Cross workers and nurses from eligibility. The bill shifts from monthly to daily rates, sparking criticism and party-line debate before a third reading next week amid high school district reforms.
Rejection of all bids for McDonough County bridge and culvert work worth about 13 000 was announced by Col. R. Miller director of the state department of public works and buildings. Lowest bids ranged from 3094 to 3646 dollars with several contractors named and bids to be rereadvertised.
In Kaylor near Scotland South Dakota on March 25 about 300 American Legion members faced an equal number of armed farmers. The clash was avoided when the legionaries found their gun tally at 30 while farmers carried shotguns and rifles. Cattle bound for Germany had been moved to the county line and then back to the corral after a prior release. Sheriff fear led to removal of the cattle from the county and the standoff ended without violence.
Former President Wilson suffered an acute attack of indigestion today. Medical aid was called, and he reportedly recovered within an hour. The Associated Press filed the report from Washington on March 25.

Fighting between 2500 communists and 2000 security police in Eisleben escalated to a half mile front. Armored forces advanced on foot and bicycles, rifles grenades and bombs in use as both sides exchanged drumlike rifle fire through the night. Casualties reported among the wounded.
Miss Jean C. Merrill of the West Side Hospital Chicago has been engaged as superintendent of Phelps Hospital and has assumed new duties. Miss Merrill comes highly recommended. Miss Lillie Morrow, previously in charge, retires from her role due to ill health but will remain at the hospital to oversee the operating room.
Personal property and real estate valued at $3 500 is left by the late Sam T. Moore of Colchester to his widow Arabella Moore to be hers absolutely. Two thousand of that amount is real estate. The widow is also appointed executrix without bonds. Mr Moore died at Colchester March 12. The will was made July 1 1910 and was witnessed by H A Musson and Ralph Burney.
The Bushnell Cooperative received a corporate charter under state law on March 22, recorded by County Recorder Martin. The company is capitalized at 50000 dollars and may deal in grain hay livestock and related needs. Incorporators include J. H. Cheek James Taylor C W Brown B H Alexander and J A Markley of Bushnell Prairie City.
Public notice lists Ivan G Murphy of Sciota township and Julu Flynn of Sciota township seeking license to wed. The short notice advertises wants in The By-Stander.
Press dispatches praise Powell Wright, a Breckenridge Texas oil well shooter, for grabbing a 20 quart nitroglycerine charge as gas threatened a blast. He then helped remove a second 200 quarts and ensured safety, preventing catastrophic damage and loss of life. Floyd Creel and Louis McCourt, Macomb visitors, were noted for similar courage in past incidents. Louis McCourt was later honored with a gold watch by The Ohio Oil Company for his brave actions years earlier.
A fire on the John Allen farm near Cottonwood church last Saturday afternoon destroyed a combined coal and smoke house. The blaze caused about $200 in damages while efforts saved the dwelling home occupied by M. G. Geer. The heat blistered the paint on the house.
