Roy Waller organized a local fund to aid the Naylor family, who are known for generosity to others in need.
Chicago based cattleman C. W. Walker, 45, prominent in Stronghurst agriculture, vanished after selling $200 worth of cattle on March 15. His wife, Mrs. Walker, fears he may have fallen to thieves as police and detectives investigate.
To move here from Springfield Missouri, J C Hines and his family will relocate soon. Mr Hines will take up the local work of the Prudential Insurance Co.
Washington reports averted strike in the packing industry after mediation by Secretary of Labor Davis. Over 100,000 workers and five large packers agreed to a six month extension of the Alschuler arbitration, with wage reductions of 8 cents per hour for hourly workers and 12 1/2 percent for piece workers, while preserving the eight hour day and overtime rates.
Baltimore mourns Cardinal James Gibbons who died at 11 33 p m after a long illness affecting his heart. He was born July 17 1854 in Baltimore to Irish parents and raised in Ireland before returning to the United States. He urged peace over war and praised American citizenship and government.
Berlin reports describe heavy property damage and loss of lives in Soviet cities and Hamburg amid communist disorder. Attacks targeted banks and public buildings, with town halls and county structures damaged in Planen, Bodewish, Leipsie, Freiberg, and Dresden. A mob failed to destroy the Auerbach town hall after police intervention. A motor lorry party robbed two savings banks at Mansfield, securing 2,000 marks.
Milton Depoy aged 83 of Colchester was found incapable of managing his affairs. Judge Ines appointed Charles Walker as conservator of his estate, which includes a 180 acre farm and Colchester property. Jurors were Frank Duncan H J Miller B D Jenkins J D Monninger Wm Woods and Chas Decker.
John Graves of the Orphanage handles four or five farm capable lads aged 15 to 17 seeking farm work this summer. They are willing and eager to learn, with minimal farming knowledge needed. Graves can be found at the city building daily seeking placements to prevent extended unemployment.
Springfield March 24. American Legion members clash over the proposed amendment to double compensation and set a $600 minimum. The Flack amendment seeking to raise bonds to 110 million was defeated 58 to 37 as the Myers bonus bill moves to third reading before adjournment. The bill’s sponsors include legion leaders.
Lieut. Arthur G. Hamilton established a new parachute drop record at Chanute Field near Champaign by leaping 24 100 feet from a De Havilland B-4 aircraft piloted by Lieut. Harry Wedington. The descent lasted one hour and twenty six minutes with the flyer awake throughout the ascent and descent.
Robert Danielson celebrates his forty eighth birthday today. Tomorrow his youngest son John William observes the sixth anniversary of his birth. Patronize our advertisers.
Jim Herron, past New York Rotary president, spoke at the Macomb Rotary luncheon at the Christian church. Delegations from Monmouth and Galesburg attended as Herron urged harmony between workers and managers, arguing there are no inherent class conflicts and Rotary should serve the world with a soulful, unified approach. His address, laced with poems and anecdotes, was praised as one of Macomb’s best.
City Court Clerk H. L. Miller will not issue service orders for jurors called for the March term who did not serve. Jurors were drawn but not summoned, some believing drawing entitled them to pay. A Tremont health school was held recently under the Home Bureau auspices.
