Nineteen entrants gathered for the 11 Speed Program event at F1 History of Local Race Track. The program features a mix of youth racers and seasoned drivers vying for top honors on a tight, fast course.
The Columbus fairgrounds host a seventeen car dirt track race on July Fourth with entries from Hollis in a Hupmobile and W. S. James list of racers including Overland and Ford Specials. Notables include La Salle entries from NL and drivers like Powell, Mellhenny, Rollin, and Callison among others.
The By-Stander team defeated their rival in a muddy normal field contest amid mixed play by Babe Keshy Mercer and Snowden. The lineup included Aulger Dawson and King for the By Stander side while Mater Helms Sharman and Kire supplied the opposition with Hulsey and Ilchrist pitching.
The late Henry D. Skidmore leaves a 14000 estate with 6000 personal and 8000 real property. Nellie M. Skidmore and Chas Skidmore receive 1000 each. widow Leda C. Skidmore gets life use. After death, remainder to be split equally between the two children. Leda Skidmore named executrix.
In Galesburg Illinois on June 28 the murder trial of Matt Materetich proceeds with witnesses outlining the Burlington No. 52 wreck near Farmington on Oct 11, 1919. Evidence shown links the wreck to deliberate track tampering. materetich faces charges for engineer John Foulk’s murder.
Springfield reports reveal that three of five dental question sets were leaked in Chicago before Springfield printing. W H Miller director of the state department of registration and education ordered a full investigation. Fifty sets sold at ten dollars each with many applicants confessing to prior access.
William Prentiss formerly a Macomb attorney now living in Chicago visits Macomb with wife Mrs Prentiss. They are staying with her brother Doug McCaughey and plan to consider Macomb their principal residence again after disposing of Michigan country holdings.
George Rice recalls June 27 1844 when Joseph Smith and his brother were killed in Carthage jail. An 800 man expedition from McDonough County sparked Mormon displacement from Nauvoo, described as the state’s civil war, with the temple ruins later destroyed by fire and time.
Constantinople authorities announce a Turko Bolshevik plot of vast proportions has been uncovered. Numerous arrests have been made, including the alleged ringleader.
Mrs Cenhas Holmes and her grandson Morris Simmers depart for a three month stay in California. They plan to visit Holmes daughter Mrs Dean Butcher in Alhambra and her son Chas in Hollywood.
Several towns including Adair Blandinsville Colchester Prairie City Industry and Macomb use the county road oiler to oil streets where pavements are absent. Colchester pressed a horse driven machine to speed up the work as the Macomb project nears completion. Afterward the county truck will move to Prairie City for more blocks, aiming for first class shaping of roads.
Ernest Ter of Grinnell Iowa is named superintendent of Macomb city schools and E B Freshwater of Mounds Illinois is chosen for the high school post. Ter, chosen from 75 applicants, has taught at Antigo Wisconsin, oversees about 2000 pupils with 65 teachers, and will join in July at a salary of 3300. Freshwater and his wife with one child plan to arrive around August 1, while two vacancies remain for the coming year.
City assessor A. Thompson announced he will turn in his dog tag inventory July fifth. Residents who promised to pay at Dougherty's Drug Store must do so by next Tuesday evening to receive tags and receipts for their dogs.
In city court a jury awarded Dr. J. A. McMillan just before noon damages of about 368 dollars plus costs to defendants to pay, after an hour of deliberation, in a dispute over 30 head of corn fed cattle and a verbal contract with Avery brothers. The plaintiff claims loss from 20 cattle not taken and lower sale price, while the defendants deny breach and cite lack of written form for contracts over 500 dollars. Attorneys Flack Flack Ker man for McMillan and Sawyer Hainline for the Averys.
Glen Hillyer remains ill at his home with physicians holding little hope for recovery after a four week illness since returning from work at Rush jewelry store. Work at Western Stoneware Plant paused today as employees attended the funeral of Simeon Whittlesey, longtime plant engineer, with John Strand of Monmouth also in attendance.
